Talkback: Labour and Conservatives fight over families

  • Does anyone else think 6 hours of home visits in the first 2 weeks and thereafter a visit every fortnight for the first 6 months is completely excessive and a waste of taxpayer's money? Even with my first child I wouldn't have wanted that many visits (only ever had one visit anyway, but used to occasionally drop into the health centre for baby weighing which meant I could also meet other mums, and of course could phone the health visitor if I had any problems). Why don't they target it at people who actually want or need this service (eg those without own transport who can't get to the clinic), and let the rest of us just get on with it? Surely it would be better to encourage new mums to get out of the house more and meet others through baby clinics etc rather than sitting at home waiting for the health visitor?
