Isn't it possible to make the house work fun and do it with your children? they can do a lot of the chores with you and you can make them into a game instead of rushing round trying to get them finished so you can play! It's how my Gran and my Mum did it. I think children actually get a real sense of pride in helping and knowing that it really did help!
It may take longer to do and of course there will be some things they can't do with you, but it turns into an amazing bonding experience as you work together to make the environment you live in more comfortable together, and as a double yay, you are passing on important life skills.
