The figure for boys doesn't sound right to me. According to the 'red book' the average birthweight for a boy is 3.6 kg which, again, according to the red book, equals 7 lb 15 oz. 7lb 8 oz would be quite a small baby, around the 25th centile. I would say the modern average for boys is at least 8lb. Someone's got their figures wrong.
