I teach baby massage and baby yoga and we sing to the babies every lesson :0) Not only are the courses hugely beneficial to babies development they are also for mums to meet it can be very lonely as a new mum if you didnt do any activities with your baby.
she should come to my house before making such huge generalisations. I sing to my little one all day long - particularly when he was between 0-9 months. now, I sing a little less -but only because he 'sings' himself. I am happy to sing to him walking along, in public, along the street, in the supermarket, on the swings.... I don't care if I don't look cool, as long as he is happy.
