Talkback: Hypnobirthing – all you need to know

  • I used HypnoBirthing - The Mongan Method and it changed my life! The scientific information helped me understand what was happening to my body so I could put the new sensations in context - it wasn't just about 'helping me cope with pain' it was about understanding why birth doesn't need to be painful AT ALL. I feel that that knowing this freed me to experience two beautiful home births (delivered by my now confident and empowered husband, as they can play a massive part in this method!) and asking for even gas and air did not even occur to me as I wasn't in pain. Other methods may also help women have better births, so it's just really positive that people seem to be more receptive to the use of hypnosis in childbirth. I feel that each method has it's own perspective and I'm so glad that I chose The Mongan Method, as it is not limited to the unnecessarily restrictive expectations of birth and empowered me to expect an AMAZING experience. Enjoy your pregnancies ladies and look forward to giving birth, it is truly transformational. :-)
  • I used HypnoBirthing (by Marie Mongan) for 2 of my babies, the difference was amazing, before I screamed and had all the drugs (inc. an epidural), with HypnoBirthing it honestly didn't hurt, I had no pain relief, no tearing and enjoyed every minute - oh and my babies weighed over eleven pounds! HypnoBirthing rocks!
  • I used Hypnobirthing (the mongan method) with my daughter and had the most fabulously calm, pain free and drug free labour in the birthing pool in Bedford hospital. I'd definitely recommend it to any of my pregnant friends and will hopefully manage to do the same next time! It couldn't have gone any better! Rachel
  • I am a HypnoBirthing practitioner teaching The Mongan Method and also a hypnotherapist specialising in Fertility, Pregnancy, Birth and beyond.  I think it is absolutely wonderful that there is so much more awareness now of the benefits of using hypnosis for birthing.

Whilst every type of programme, including those put together by individual hypnotherapists specialising in this area, are I am sure fully confident that their way is best, the most important thing for couples to look for is the right practitioner for them.  Find out where your local practitioners are and speak with them and see if they fit with you.  An important element that I would say is worth considering however is not taking a shorter course over a longer one.  I know we live in a very time poor society but it fascinates me how often my clients feel sad at the end of the course.  I'm not saying you can't get the results if you do and in fact I work with women from 38 weeks where there is no choice.  But the journey is often as important as the destination and having key messages repeated, taking regular time to relax, giving focus to your baby and your birth preparations and mixing with other like minded positives couples is a very enjoyable part of the process.

I love the fact that more women are having better birth experiences because of HypnoBirthing and the more positive articles out there talking about it the better image

  • What I like about the Monghan Method is that it incorporates all aspects of childbirth. You can learn hypnosis techniques alone  but having all information regarding pregnancy ,labour, induction and  how to maximize your experience when labour takes a different turn and how to find your ante natal and labour options is integral getting your calm birth. It is not just about hypnosis alone but finding the empowerment to have a say in how your birth is conducted.May I just ask when you look for your what course to go on,  try not to think about time or money. HypnoBirthing classes are the same price of 4-5 months of acrylic nails .

  • I tried the Natal Hypnotherapy cd's, with my first child. I practiced regularly as per the NH instructions but felt there was something missing, it didn't educate as to what was happening with my body etc therefore even though I found it relaxing during pregnancy I found it ineffective during labour. I have since used HypnoBirthing The Mongan Method and found it fabulous, it had all the missing ingredients that I needed. I cannot recommend the HypnoBirthing The Mongan Method classes highly enough.
  • I used HypnoBirthing (The Mongan Method) for the birth of my first baby; it was so amazing, it didn't go to plan at all, but myself and my partner stayed so calm and positive throughout that it completely changed our birth experience for the better. Everyone there couldn't believe how well we dealt with everything. It was such a powerful experience for me that I subsequently trained as a practitioner and I now love helping other couples to enjoy and be in control of their babies' births.

It was great to read this article highlighting the benefits of using hypnosis. I do think that any form of relaxation and hypnosis used for birth is great, as it does make such a difference to the outcomes (shown in the statistics available). However, I particularly chose the Mongan Method for the way it includes and empowers the father (or other birth companion) as part of the birth. This makes such a good start for the family, and really strengthened our bond as a new family. I'm so glad I discovered it!

  • Hi I am a hypnobirthing mum (and now practitioner) to two wonderful children. I found the course by accident and it took me from being a very scared pregnant to be mum (how on EARTH is my cervix to get to 10cm and how on EARTH am I going to get my baby out?) to being completely excited about giving birth and having two completely pain free births - I felt sensations, I felt my body move through labour but at all times completely manageable and controllable. Not even as much as a paracetamol needed. One labour 4 hours the other 2. The course teaches you all about how your body works - the uterus, the cervix, the pelvis, how your baby descends and leaves your body, what happens during surges (contractions). And about how fear affects and impedes your birth. The breathing and relaxation techniques are amazing! Everytime I practiced I was alert and energised for the rest of the day. The whole course made complete sense and on both birth days meant I had complete confidence in my baby and my body - including one being premature. I am now a practitioner and in answer to courses being expensive - no not really. Classes in some cases start from just 99.00 depending on practitioner and area! It is the best investment in your baby and body ever - I still use the tecnhiques at the dentist and as such now have treatment with no anaesthetic - and I am a wimp! HypnoBirthing changed my life and my births. I am sure without it I would not have had the amazing births I did have.
  • I used HypnoBirthing - The Mongan Method with my second and it was such an amazing experience that I trained as a practitioner and now teach other expectant couples. It is wonderful to see HypnoBirthing in the news and more and more mums finding out about it and using it to make labour a more gentle and calm journey.

  • HypnoBirthing The Mongan Method is amazing. I have witnessed ladies using the techniques and having beautiful calm births. It is so much more then just relaxation and worth every penny.
  • My first pregnancy ended in an emergency casarean section so this time, fearful that my labour would go the same way, I did some research and decided that natal hypnotherapy techniques woould help me feel more postive about my labour and give me the best chance of a natural delivery. I began listening to the cds (very relaxing!) and attended a couple of workshops with my husband run by Dot.
I soon found myself feeling relaxed and excited about my labour whereas I had been dreading it.
My labour didn't go exactly to plan (I had to transfer into hospital from my homebirth), but I was able to stay calm and positive and used the techniques I learned on the workshops to manage my pain. whilst I used gas and air as well, I am convinced that without the natal hypnotherapy techniques I would have needed an epidural and that this would have lead straight to another casarean for me. Instead, I still managed to acheive a fairly natural delivery under difficult circumstances. Milo was born very healthy and was breastfeeding happily within the hour, time I missed out on with my first son.
I will definitely be using natal hypnotherapy techniques with my next children!
  • I can only say great things about HypnoBirthing (The Mongan Method).  I used it successfully during the birth of my son and had a beautiful experience birthing him (full birth story here:  www.zenbirth.co.uk/eliot.htm)  It was such a positive experience that I have trained to come a HypnoBirthing Practitioner so I can help other women benefit from this empowering approach to natural child birth.  The great thing about HypnoBirthing is that it is a full ante-natal programme. It covers everything expectant parents need and want to know about pregnancy, labour and birth, including, crucially, how the birthing body and muscles work and how to use breathing and relaxation to let the body do the job it is designed to.  During HypnoBirthing classes self-hypnosis is taught in addition to the breathing and relaxation techniques and husbands/birth partners take an active role, and even learn how to give light-touch massage to labouring mums, which is highly effective and great for bringing mum and dad even closer.

  • I used HypnoBirthing for my daughter's birth and loved the detailed nature of the course - how it blended hypnotherapy principles and antenatal education together (at last! Antenatal education that doesn't focus on epidural needles!). I had gas and air and a pool and gave birth at home after a straightforward, calm labour.

I loved it so much I'm training as a practitioner now. :)
