Talkback: Dads’ signature to be a legal requirement on birth certificate

It would be all good and well in an ideal world but this idea seems to be ill-thought-out. There are a whole spectrum of reasons why the father could not or should not sign the form.

For example what if the father disappeared without a trace as soon as he found out he was going to be a dad? How would anyone get in touch with him if no one knows where he is?

What if the baby was conceived by rape? Would the mother really want him there to sign the form?

What if the mother simply doesn't know who the father is?

What if the father died before the baby was born?

What if the baby was conceived by using a sperm donor or something and the donor wishes to remain anonymous?

I know most of these scenarios are awful but they do happen and should be taken into consideration before passing a one-size-fits-all law.
