This is the parents' value (no gift giving). I don't connect gift giving on Christmas as the event that will spoil the child/children and or the identify experience that will negatively impact the child's ability to be appreciative. Raising children to become productive, responsible caring adults is on a continuum- teaching values and emotional intelligent through modeling.
