Smacking children: what are the laws across the UK?

Is it legal to smack your child? Not in some parts of the UK. And in other parts, it depends on how old your child is and how "reasonable" the physical punishment is...

A smack when I was younger, never did me any harm, and if parents used proper guidelines, then there is no harm in a child being punished, if they do not listen the first time
I sometimes had my backside stung or my legs or hand made to sting, not just by my mum or dad, but also a teacher once punished me by slapping both my legs. None of these punishments did me any harm
