Hearing test

Need insight... My 10 month old has been able to pass any hearing tests since she was born but she dances when music is on and says mama and babbles. Could she really have hearing loss even though she can do those things or what could cause her to fail all these tests? (8 OAE and 1 ABR so far)

  • Hi Tia,

Hearing can be a complicated thing to understand & there are various theories as to what could be happening.

Generally baby's hearing tests involve them placing a small earpiece into babies ear that emits a 'click' which should be picked up by the hairs in babies ear & the device then receives a signal that the 'click' has been heard.  Usually baby is asleep during the test for best results.

Sometimes baby can fail the test if they are too alert when it is undertaken.  Sometimes it can come down to a build up of wax in the ear (Glue ear) which will allow some hearing but some quieter sounds may get missed.  Another theory is that they aren't hearing but are responding to the vibrations from speakers or what they are seeing (if they see you approach they will turn).
