delayed visual maturation

HI mummies,

Anyone experiencing the same difficulties as me?  I have a 7 week old baby boy who doesn't seem to focus and avoids eye-contact.  Have been to several paeds and only one just mentioned the term of delayed visual maturation.  I have read some posts about it but would like to hear from you. I am terribly worried and anxious.  My baby seems fine from all aspects except for eye-contact!!  Please some advise would be greatly appreciated.  thanks

  • hi

all i can say is my youngest took what seemed like an age to look and focus and she is fine infact much more observant than her older sisters so try not to get too worried maybe hes just doing it at his own pace

  • Hi,

I know this is a slightly old thread, but I have a 5 1/2 month old daughter that has been labeled with DVM. She did not seem to see at all for the first 3 months and then slowly started seeing/tracking lights, followed by black/white objects, then brightly colored objects. This past week is the first time she has looked at me. Her eye contact/facial awareness is still inconsistent, but seems to be improving. This has been the longest 5 months of my life with the constant waiting and worrying. We have seen so many specialists and are scheduled to see neurology this week. She had an MRI which was normal and had her retina and optic nerve tested, both looked fine. Klo279, I think our little ones may be around the same age and would love to know how yours is doing now.

  • I have a baby with this and optic nerve hypoplasia. He went from blind, to tracking lights to now nearly normal vision in 18 months. Practice and therapy really do help. We have had amazing support from physiotherapists and specialist visual impairment teacher who will support him throughout education.
