Anyone's baby measure small at 20 week scan?

Hi ladies

Hope you don't mind me gatecrashing with a question.

We had our 20 week scan today and our baby is measuring small - she is on the 3rd percentile.

Everything else was fine and her measurments are all in proportion, just small. Also the amount of amniotic fluid is fine.

I was just wondering if anyone else had this and went on for things to be ok?

I'm really worried - it's taken so much to get here (had 3 mc's in the 10 months prior to this pregnancy) and I'm so scared of it all being taken away again :\(

We have to go for a growth scan in 2 weeks time.

Thanks, NN 20+5 xxx

  • Hi hon, not got any advice I'm afraid but just bumping it up for you so it doesn't get lost in all this madness!

I measured small throughout due to low levels of amniotic fluid and LO was absolutely fine - it seems that pregnancy is one worry after another, especially if you've MC'd before (I had 2).

Can I ask if your little girl measured small at any of her previous scans, or has her growth never been commented on before?

  • HI
my last baby measured small... she came early at 35 weeks but is totally fine. I had placenta previa and that may have contributed to it.

My 4th baby was estimated to be 8lbs when I was scanned at 40 plus 2 days. He was born the next morning weighing 9lbs 11 oz.... soooooo they are not always right. IF they were worried they would surely refer you??? IF YOU are worried then ask for a consultant appnt to put your mind at rest

    all the best

  • Thank you Charlotte and Hannah for your replies :\)

Hannah - this was actually our 10th scan so far! (due to lots of brown discharge and bleeding in 1st trimester and also previous mc's). They've never really showed a concern before but have said that her CRL was a bit below average (they always gave me a date later than my EDD) - I also noticed this when comparing to the 'averages' on website or in books.

  • Hopefully then if she's always measured a little behind she's just destined to have a slight frame - lucky little thing! - especially if you or her daddy are slight too? You could always ring your midwife for a chat if you're still concerned, I'm sure she'll have experienced it lots before.

Oh, and STEP AWAY from the averages. Your baby and everyone's elses is far from average! ;D

  • Hey huni,
My 20wk scan showed my baby was on the 2nd centile.
I had 3 further growth scans which all said she was on the lower end of the scale but nothing to worry about.
I had her on my due date and she absolutley fine, 5lb 5oz so dinky in relation to most but perfect in every way!
She's now 20wks on friday & still is smaller than most @ 14lbish.
I'm starting weaning on friday too as she's very interested in food & still waking for night feeds but mainly only twice.
It took us a long time to get pg & we had ICSI in the end.
Its worth every second huni, enjoy ur pregnancy & ur lovely bump!

  • dee dee - thank you for your post - must have crossed when I posted before! They have referred us for another scan in 2 weeks and to see a consultant (am already consultant led anyway). The sonographer did say that if she was really worried she would have referred us straight away this week, so that's a little reassuring.

Hannah - that's what I'm hoping! I am only petite and have always been naturally underweight and my husband is also very slim. We're seeing our MW on Wednesday anyway and she's really lovely so I'm sure we'll have a good chat to her about it.

ICSIBABY - Thank you SO much for your reassuring post. It's really good to hear that it can turn out ok and not be anything to worry about. Keeping our fingers crossed that this is just the case for us too. Congratulations on your baby after all you went through! :\)

  • Remember small is still healthy and healthy is what you want!!!
I measured 'small' at 30 weeks, lo was born 6lb5oz which is classed as 'normal' (whatever that is) and she's done nothing but gain weight since then. i had low fluid level and I'm not particularly big myself.
If there was any concern you wouldn't be waiting 2 weeks before going back
    Hope all goes well
  • One of my girls has always measured small. She was born on the 0.4th centile and is now on the 9th (at 15 weeks, 8 corrected). Even if your LO is a bit dinky, she will more than likely make up for it when she's born - get ready for some marathon feeding sessions!! xx
  • Thank you pumbacat and trying4babyM - it really helps to read your replies :\)
