Breasts don't feel full

Hi

I'm getting a bit worried about my supply.
Eddison is 3.5wks old and exclusively BF. He feeds every 2-3 hrs during the day (I wake him after 3hrs if he doesn't wake naturally) but even when he goes 4.5hrs at night my breasts don't feel firm.

I'm eating 3 meals and snacks, drinking loads squash/water and resting when I can (I also have a 2.5yr old that doesn't sleep through!).
Our feeding "routine" is: feed him on 1 side until he falls asleep, wind him and back on same side til he falls asleep, change his nappy and then feed from other side. He'll generally feed for 30-40mins in total, unless he falls asleep so deeply that I can't wake him!

I don't want to sound defeatist but I really don't know what else I can do to help my supply. I don't have to time to express after each feed because my toddler's patience is already being tested by a very clingy and sucky baby who gets most of my attention.

Eddison is being weighed on Tues so I'll see how his weight-gain is before I make any decisions.

Thanks for letting me have a whinge

Liz x

  • Obviously you will find out for sure when he is weighed but he sounds like he is being satisfied by your milk if he is going 2-3 hours between feeds, so maybe it's not a problem? My breasts have phases of feeling full and then not so full. At the beginning they never felt that full and oddly (after almost 18 weeks of BFing) they feel full a lot!

In terms of increasing supply if you do think there is a problem, I've heard that eating porridge and drinking fennel tea is good!

Good luck - it must be really hard BFing with another LO to look after xx

  • 2/3 hours is fantastic!!
He sounds very satisfied to me.
Maybe worth once he breaks off one side or falls asleep, after the winding to put him on the other side, i was told by my bf advisor that if they break off 1 side they have had what they want on it and to reattach on the other boob.
however you sound like you have it pretty sussed and even tho your boobs dont feel full your lo is obviously gettin whay he needs or else he wouldnt sleep so well.
mine only ever felt truly full after about 6hrs,my friend was full to bursting after 2,i think we are lucky x
  • Hi Liz,

Just wanted to add that I remember thinking my breasts didn't feel that full this time round. With Angelo, they always felt full (and often engorged) for the first few months. I think that may have been that his feeds were more erratic and frequent. Despite the absence of the full feeling, I have never had a problem feeding Nina.

The kids paedatrician is a lactation specialist and she told me that , once the milk supply is in, it is unusual to not have enough milk for your baby.

It sounds like you are doing really well. I know how hard it is with a toddler too. And don't worry, it won't be long before Spence has more of your time again. xx
  • Just a little update...

HV came round and weighed Eddison on Tues. He's gained 8oz in a week which I'm so proud about. He's still only tiny - 7lb 2oz but he's doing well.

Thanks for the advice and support.

    Liz & Eddison 3wks 6days xx
  • My breasts never feel full hunny! Sounds like you are doing a perfect job!
