Tongue tie, nipple soreness and other questions

My 17 day old has a Tongue tie. As a result bf has been quite painful. We are lucky in that we have been referred to a specialist and will hopefully have it corrected next week. In the meantime I am desperate to allieviate the pain I can have when feeding her. I have seen a bf consultant who was very helpful in showing us how to get a good attachment. Problem is my baby can get very frustrated and come unlatched easily. We then have to go through whole process again. This causes my nipples to become even sorer.
Has anyone else had this problem? Did the procedure to fix it make a difference?

Another issue is relentless feeding on occassion, always at night sometimes for hours. She will not settle at all and cries until on the breast again. Last time I gave in and used a dummy, as it was making my nipples so sore and I needed a break to replenish milk supply. Apparently this is called cluster feeding and is baby's way of increasing milk supply for a growth spurt.
Does anyone else experience this and if so what tactics do you use to deal with it?

Any one else determined to continue bf despite hurdles like this?
Does it get easier????

  • my baby hasn't had tongue tie, but bf babies eat more and have to suck to get your milk supply up so go with it and don't get frustrated. i read a book while feeding so i don't fidget and distract her, we're both much calmer for it! don't give up the breastfeeding it's well worth the initial struggle.
try lansinoh for the sore nipples.
  • my dd had tongue tie (born sept 08) and had it snipped when she was 7 days old. it made a BIG difference within 24 hours she was stretching out her tongue a lot mre and therefore attaching much better. she didnt cry at all, it was over in half a second, so dont worry it doesnt hurt bub at all.

in the meantime, you could try expressing between feeds (i only ever needed 15mls to give her one feed so i could have a break) and give it to her in a syringe (to avoid nipple confusion). this worked wonders for me just having that one break a day or every now and then.

    good luck xxxxxx
  • PS. i am still bfeeding her now at 14mths and its a breeze! well done for seeking help and breastfeeding!. image
  • My baby had tongue tie my mother in law noticed I had to push to get something done.
But she had it done at 6 weeks, I had breastfed up til then through the pain and now its100% better and she takes a full fed in one sitting rather than being really fussy and me feeding every 30 mins!

    Good luck x
  • Hi I replied to your post in Baby, but my son had his fixed at 8 days and it made a big difference. He found it difficult to stay latched on before it was sorted.
  • Thanks so much for the replies
Makes me feel so much more positive.
I am looking forward to better feeding and less pain....4 days until she sees the specialist.

  • hope it goes well - you are doing amazingly. Phoebe (now 6 months) cluster fed some evenings, so painful and frustrating, but it only lasted til about 10 or 12 weeks. I heard it's also to help push the bubbles of wind through their bowels. x
