Advice on hours please

Ok, so this might end up being long, but I'll try to at least make it make sense! Forgive the lack of paragraphs, I'm writing on my mobile, as computer is being repaired. So, I had my ds in January, he's just turned 8 weeks old. I am a nurse in a hospital, so have to think early on what hours I will return to. My ward sister is going to have to be reasonably flexible, so want to speak with her a few months before actually returning in September. I'm the main wage earner, so can't afford to drop as many shifts as I would like. I work 37.5 hours a week, and will probably only be able to drop one shift, to 30 hours a week. My OH works 5 nights a week from 10pm-7am. We're hoping his work will be a little flexible ie. if he needed to finish at 6am or start a bit later. The shifts I have are 7-3 and 2.30-9.30, with the night shift being 9-7.30. James will be in nursery 2 days a week to give OH a break (as he's trying to sleep during the day) and I feel it will help socialisation etc. Ok if you have actually read this far, thank you, and here is the actual question! image I'm not sure how to spread my hours over the week. I obviously could only do nights when my OH isn't working so max of 2 in a week. Early shift OH would have to come home from work an hour earlier. Late shifts he'd have to go potentially go in a little later. It's weekends where he'd miss out on the sleep as his nights off are 2 together in the week. I'm not sure if I should say I will do a long day. This would mean being away from 6.30am until nearly 10pm, and I'd not manage an early shift the next day!! But it would mean I work 3 days instead of 4 if I then have 2 short shifts as well. I realise this is so so long winded. But I would be so grateful if anyone actually replies! image xx mithical and James 8 weeks 1 day.

  • hi im a student nurse and dreading goimng back asa i have to cover all shifts and dont get a say in it but if things dont work out ill go back to work on the wards and if i do, i am thinking of doing 2 long days and 1 normal shift a week. our long days are 13.5 hours so this would give me 34.5 hours a week and only be away from kiddies 3 days a week which also saves me alot on fuel!
would this be an option for you??
  • Hi wannababy, thanks a lot for your reply. I was thinking the long day would mean I could go back 3 days instead of 4. I don't think I could manage 2 long days a week as I hate them! Plus this would mean I could only really do them on OH's days off, so makes it less flexible on the ward (although that's the least of my worries! ) It kind of works out only nights on OH's days off or a long day, then 2 other short shifts somewhere else in the week. preferably without an early directly after a long day! I think that's it! xx
