New Boots

My little boy Paul got his first pair of Piedro Boots last week and they are so cute we love them. he only wears them for short times, in his standing frame or if we stand him up to the furniture and things. They are heavy for him but he can manage to crawl a bit with them on.

I hadn't realised (stupidly) that there was a catalogue to pick from I was amazed at how nice all the shoes were, I had a picture in my head, I'm ashamed to say, of awfull shiny black boots as the only choice how wrong I was.

Hi chriss, so glad you like his new boots, it is so exciting getting new shoes, sounds like he is adapting to his new boots well, we had to get Isaac new boots the other week as he had grown a whole size in 8 weeks, trouble is now his orthotic inserts are too small now and we cant get an appointment will the end of May
Megan finally got her referral to the musculo skeletal specialist who did an assessment on her then said that the gp should have referred her to the paediatric department not the main dept as it wasnt really appropriate for her to be seen at an adult clinic so we will have a wait of up to 3 months for her to be seen again, however on the plus side we do now have a diagnosis of benign joint hypermobility syndrome, she also said something about lumbar lordosis which basically means that the base of her back has a pronounced inward curve and something else with her legs but I cant remember what it was, they are hopefully going to give her excercises to strengthen her hips as they are twisted and not supporting her which is makeing the femurs bow, the knees in particular the left one rotate inwards and her ankles and feet are pronateed (whatever that means), hopefully the excercises will help sort things out but there is a chance they wont and she may need a brace when she is a bit older.

Sounds odd to say but I am relieved because at least now they are listening to me and hopefully I wont have to wait 9 years before they decide to do something about Isaac.

    Take care xx

I am so glad that you have a specific diagnosis for Megan, I know what you mean about at least knowing what the problem is, You now know too that your GP is complete crap if she didn't even refer to the correct place.

I know a bit about Lordosis as I read up about it before I had physio as I had a feeling I had some sort of problem with that. she said my lower spine has a slight lordisis which affects posture and hips (i had a bit of trouble whilst pregnant due to this) I'm sure the exersises will help her and at least now it sounds like it might be more of a regular thing rather than just a one off assessment. I'm really pleased you pushed for it. Keep on at them though don't give them an inch. I'd be inclined to mention this to the GP too at my next appointment (weather I'd be brave enought though I don't know like to think i would be)

Paul's been wearing his boots loads more and can now pull himself up to his feet some of the time if he's not tired . i even got him to do a little march leaning on the couch, he was so pleased with himself. I don't know how I'd cope if we had to pay, they're over ??100 a pair and we'll go back in 3 months for new ones (or sooner if his feet grow quicker)

catch up with you again soon keep me posted.

    take care x

He sounds like hes doing great with his new boots. I am pleased that I lost it with the gp and got the referral, to be honest I dont think I will see her any more, I will see one of the other partners at the practice. She is definitley crap, she kept trying to get me on anti depressants when hubby was diagnosed with a brain tumour, I sttod my ground though, yes I was stressed and worried but not depressed. Megan has been a bit happier as we found a new shoe shop and the lady there works really closely with the hospital orthotics department (different hospital to ours), she spent absolutely ages with Isaac fitting his shoes and really made sure they fit, we went to get Meg some today and for the first time she actually liked them rather than nearly crying because she had to have them. She seems to know so much too she was using all the terms the physios had been using such as pronated left ankle and genu varum (that was the term they used for her legs bowing) and really showed me how the shoes corrected at her ankle and more importantly how to check if they were not supporting her properly. They were still expensive at ??40 but it is worth it now I know she is happy and they are fitting great.

Hopefully the physio wont take too long to come through and we can really start working on her joints xx

That sounds great I'm so pleased, maybe you could get Meg's Physio when they see her to see about getting her shoes on NHS, just push push push for it, surely you are entitled to it, if she (and Isaac) now have a disgnosis which is more specific, they should be doing more for you. Anyway I'm going on but if they say they can't do anything, ask them for all the information they have on all funding available for disabled/special needs and apply for everything.

anyway at least you have found someone who knows what you're requirements are for the shoes I bet you won't go anywhere else now.

I am really pleased with Paul's progress, he seems to have come on so far in the last couple of weeks it's amazing I'm hopeful he will just carry on getting stronger.

well hopefully i'll be telling you soon that he's walking, can't wait, I know he will now I can see it coming, I've always hoped and though he probably would but now I can really visualise it.

anyway catch you later take care x

Fab news! Lydia just got her second pair of boots yesterday and they are Piedro too, very cute!! Her first pair were white with pink laces but this time they're white with a little black heart on the ankle which she keeps pointing to. The boots make such an amazing difference, she stands up so much better and she keeps saying "Lydia just walking!" (She can now walk with her V-Tec walker and holding our hands). Hopefully her confidence and strength with grow with these boots and I hope to post that our little lady will be walking soon. Physio again on Monday and I hope they will see a massive improvement too.

Paul has outgrown his first pair of Peidros now and we are just waiting on his second pair, they ar making such a difference, he is standing more confidently and is trying to take a few steps already I just love them.

hi. my joshua, my 3rd son has to wear these boots as well. he has hypermobilty syndrome and fallen arches which he also needs the inserts for. his joints are so lax that they roll over each other especially his ankle joints. it causes him alot of pain. he has had physio and the boots for the last 4 years, but we see no improvement. i was told that he would only need to wear the boots til he was 4-5 years old, he is now coming up to be 6 in 5 weeks. i am not sure how much longer he will have to wear them. i would love to go out and buy him some nice shoes from clarkes, although the peidro boots are ok. he has some that are like trainers at the moment that go right above his ankle joint. he is teased at school because of his boots, children can be so mean sometimes.
we have to wait 6-8 weeks from getting the appointment at the hospital to have a re-measure to actually getting the boots as they come from spain, and 4 weeks later he haa grown again, it is so silly. but we just keep going back.
hope all your lo's are getting on ok. xx

yeah we have similar problems with booking in for measurements but the appliance bloke is really cool he tells me not to bother with an appt and just turn up he's cool. Has physio told you whether they think the physio is improving things?

i'm sorry to hear that he is teased in school, I love the boots I think they're lovely but I know kids can be cruel.
