private clomid treatment, opinions please

Hi everyone

We have been referred by my doctor to a nhs specialist because I don't ovulate.

My appointment us at the end of the month which really isn't long but I've been really down about everything the last few weeks and it's taking over my life.

We have found out yesterday that my nhs specialist also does private treatment and we're debating whether to go this way. He is available straight away a private consultation us around £100 although he hasn't said exactly what it is. I have told him were worried about the cost and he has said he can write to my doctor and get some of the required tests done through the nhs.

Do you think the private route would be expensive and am I mad to go private when our nhs appointment is 3 wweeks away? My worry with the nhs appointment is ï think we will get turned away my partners bmi is over 30 but you wouldn't tell by looking at him so unless he gets weighed there no one would know. I'd hate to wait for the nhs appointment to then get turned away and need to go private anyway.

I'm a little worried that he may not prescribe clomid aswell. He put in his email he would private a short course of clomid if he finds it to be necessary. Well I'm not ovulating so surely it's necessary.

My partner also had his sperm analysis results back and I'm not sure if they were any good or not and if that will affect us. His sperm count was 74 million with a density of 9 million and a density of morphological normal and motile sperm is 5%    is 5% bad?

Any wise words lovely people

  • Personally I will say wait for the NHS appointment. 3 weeks will go by so quickly. Despite the initial consult being £100 once you are seen privately there is the chance you will end up paying for all treatments which may have been free via the NHS.

Except you are prepared for the cost. You should take a lot at the treatments and expected cost for each and  may need more than once course etc depending on what treatment is required.

However even if you are not eligible at the initial consult you will not be charged the initial fee and will be given a treatment plan and estimated cost.

  • hey x

I am currently under the nhs, and I know how you feel about all the waiting!!

we started the process in april this year and only last week was I prescribed clomid. My Doctor told me that I had to wait and get my BMI down to 31 or less. when I first went it was 32 and I have a gastric band so it didn't take me too long to lose the extra weight, after i lost it i made an appointment to go back which was then another few weeks wait to be then told that i need my BMI to be 29 or lower. which was upsetting because i have altogether lost 6stone in the last 2 years and starting to feel good about myself to be then told im still too fat... so i went away and lost the extra as they said. when i got home i rang to make an appointment to see him again knowing there would be a wait.. i didn't expect 3 months wait!

so anyway we waited for the appointment last week and as i said they have finally given me 6 months of clomid.

for my partner they have never weighed him. he is over weight but they don't seem too fussed about that. its more the woman that they are bothered about.

I would say think about it and what can you afford? maybe ask them if you go private what happens if you get to a point where you cant afford to pay the treatment can you then go back to the nhs but where you left of with being private or do you have to start again?

im currently saving for incase this doesn't work and we need to go down the IVF route as i know the waiting list in our area for IVF is ridiculous!

i hope everything goes well for you both x x

  • Hi

    Thanks for the replies.

We decided to take the private appointment and it was definitely worth the £100. He saw us the same day and said he would start me of on letrozole. He said he thinks I have polysistic ovaries. He booked me in for a scan next Monday with the nhs privatley (£100 rather than £400 private with the climic we was at) and then he is going to squeeze me in during his free nhs consultants next week to give me the letrozole as he couldn't give it me from the clinic we was at the other day.

He said he would then keep us on the nhs list for blood tests/scans etc that come up unless we email him and ask him to do any of it privately again. So it really has worked out well for us.

It might of only saved me three weeks for the initial consultation but it means we've moved onto the prescription really quick. I started my provera straight away so that im ready for the letrozole.

Just thought I'd share incase it ever helps anyone else that are unsure what to do.

I think it helped that I found an nhs consultant that also does private appointments rather than going to somewhere like nurture fertility.

  • Hi I have been on clomid twice my little girls 5 and I'm currently 23 weeks pregnant I took mine day 2 to 6 good luck

  • I was referred by doc a year ago. Consultant sent me for dye test and came back all tubes etc clear and husband semen analysis normal but because my cycles inconsistent I was put on clomid 50mg cd2-6. I'm on cd 25 of third cycle and got bfn today so expect to go back to see consultant soon Unfortunately. I used cheap OPKs for first two clomid cycles and couldn't pinpoint ovulation but bought digital one for this cycle and got peak fertility cd11-12 which would suggest a 25-26 day cycle for me. Would definitely say not to use cheap OPKs and hope you all have better luck than I have had.x
