RH shot

Not sure if this is the right spot for this, but, I have been told previously that due to my blood type and the blood type of my husband, that I would need to get the RH shot.   I'm wondering if anyone else has had to do this and how often?  Do I need to get it before getting pregnant?  Or do I wait until I find out I'm pregnant and go get it immediately?
