Coming off the pill after 1 week of a new pack?

So me and hubby have decided to try for a baby, ive been on the pill for over 9 years. I took 1 week into my new pack and then decided to stop. 3 days later ive had a period (assuming this is normal after stoping the pill) but a really painful one! I never had any pain with any before! Is this because ive stopped the pill? Also i got told by the nurse i could stop any time but after googling...alot of sites said you shouldnt ='( have i messed this all up!!!????
