Update/ Metformin-advice or success stories pls?

Well, my 2nd appointment finally came after waiting patiently (ish haha) for 4 months. I thought I'd share the details in case it helps anyone else...

I saw the consultant this time who was much more supportive and understanding than the registrar I saw last time. We spent a long time discussing my options and what my results showed which was basically:

- DH's sperm is fine- no issues at all
- My Hysocy showed 'bulky' ovaries with a large amount of cysts consistent ith pcos but no issues with tubes, womb, lining etc
-My bloods in November when I was sent by the GP was FSH 4 and LH 14 and in January they were FSH 4 and LH 8- which showed an improvement but in order for me to ovulate and get a cycle the numbers need to be similiar ie 4 and 4. Again, they both showed pcos.

The consultant thinks my ovaries have become resistant to insulin. Really insulin should play a part in the process of triggering ovulation but my ovaires have gotten used to have excessive amounts and too much LH so they aren't responding as they should. I've been put on a Metformin to try and reduce correct the hormone levels. My BMI is normal and as I'm only 26 she wants to try to address my cycle issues first without using clomid etc. I go back in 3 months and although she can't guarantee it will work she is hoping I'll start to get something resembling a cycle (so I'll be BD'ing all the way  ) and then when I go back she will re-assess things and try clomid and ovarian drilling if I still haven't got my bfp then after that I would be referred to a specialist for injections.

I was a little disheartened at first, not to be given clomid but there more I've thought about it the more it makes sense to try and let my cycle address itself-she also said if I don't get bfp this way but get AF's she can up the dose but the current dose will also make clomid more likely to work. She isn't sending me for blood tests at the moment she just wants me to relax a little more and see what happens over the next 3 months.

I don't know much about Metformin so if anyone can point me in the right direction with tips, advice and success stories I'd love to hear them! I have to take 1 a day and build up over the next 3 weeks to 3 a day- I've been warned they are likely to make me sick and give me diarrohea. It also says I can't drink any alcohol but I have a day out at the races planned thi weekend- has anyone drank with them and been ok???

I'm not going to cbfm or bbt chart to begin with I'm going to see how I get on first. The consultant also reassured me that the ovulation pains, nausea and periods pains I'd thought I'd been having were genuine as despite not having a bleed everything else will have been carrying on as normal in my cycle.

I'm feeling so much better and more positive now! Thank you for all the support you've given to get me to this stage- I really feel like I'm starting to move forward and out of limbo and I couldn't have done that without your shoulders to cry on and words of wisdom. Hopefully I will have an af or bfp to report in the near future- I'll be happy with whichever comes first ;\).

Sending love and babydust to you all. J xxxx

    Hey Hope!
I've been on Metformin for two months and still no sign of AF for me. I don't know if it has changed my hormone levels but I have generally felt better on it except for the odd diarrhoea or constipation (sorry tmi!). I'm only on 1 a day though so nothing like your dose. I have had alcohol and been ok but again I'm at a lower dose. I did worry about that at first so googled and found that some women get sick from drinking on metformin but some work around it by not taking it on the day they are drinking and the day before.
Don't know if that helps but hope you enjoy your day at the races!!

Hello again, Mrs Robson. That's unlucky- sorry to hear it has brought your AFs back. I'm currently on 500mg and will eventually be on 1500mg- they told me they can increase or decrease the dose when I go back, depending on how it has worked- maybe they will do that with you too. I think you're right I'm hoping to carry on taking it (except for Sat) and then I can get used to it before I'm back in work next week. I also just want to get started with it after all this waiting over the months.

    Thanks xxx

Yeah hopefully now I'm seeing the fertility expert on Monday he'll be able to adjust my dose and maybe it'll work then....

Hope you have a fab weekend! Is it this Saturday you're going to the races? Should be nice weather for it too!

I'm having a girl weekend in the West Country while DH does the Paris marathon - hehe! I think I got the better end of that deal!!

Yes apparently they will play around with the amounts. They've told me when i go back in 3 months that they will consider clomid if this hasn't worked and possibly ovarian drilling, depending on what's happening. After that they'd look at hormone injections and referring me on to Liverpool Wome's hospital who specialise in infertility. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that they are a lot more things they can do to try and cure the pcos and a lot more steps before IVF, which I hadn't realised before now. Seeing as you're in virtually the same position as me, I wonder whether your consultant will take a similar route.

Yes, we are going to the grand national tomorrow- I'm looking forward to it. I was fine on the met yesterday so think I'm going to risk taking it again tonight rather than skipping one.

You've totally got the better deal- have fun haha.

    Good luck with Monday xx

    Hi
I was on Metformin for both of my children. With my first I had been trying for 3 half years gefore I went to dr for them to diagnose pcos. I was on 3 a day and at first they did make me ill til my body adapted. They helped me to lose weight and bought my cycles down from 6 monthly to every 30 ish days. I was pg with my 1st 6months after starting them. With my 2nd i went straight on them and they worked fine unfortunately I had 3mc within 8 months (due to sticky blood and needing aspirin as well) but then conceived my 2nd also had clomid and had him last December. Am waiting to finish bf so I can go on it again - for me it worked wonders but maybe I was lucky.
As for drinking I a\m not sure as I never drink anyway due to an allergy to alcohol.
Good luck hope you get your bfp soon

    Hi ladies

I was diagnosed with PCOS in October last year after an MC and irratic periods. I was put straight onto Metformin 500mg a day for the first 28 days then 1000mg. When they put my dose up I had a pretty bad tummy and felt travel sick etc for about 5 days but it soon disappeared. In the first 5 days we were away with the in-laws and alcohol definately didn't agree with the tablets either. I think as soon as your body gets used to them it's fine.

I was on Metformin for only two months before I got my BFP! I am now nearly 18 weeks pregnant and due on the 13th September.

I had a heartbreaking time ttc. I know how awful it can be, if you scroll back through some older posts on this forum you'll see some posts from me ;\)

I think now you have been given the metformin things will be great, think positive as you're so much closer to getting your BFP now! Also it sounds as though your GP is really helpful, mine were dragging their heels as I was 27 (young in their eyes) even though we had been ttc for 18 months?!

The only other thing that helped me no end was Agnus Castus. I got it from speaking to a registered Accupuncturist in my area, he gave me great advice and a really strong and natural tincture form. Having not had a period for 5 and a half months, AF arrived 17 days after taking it....miracle stuff if you ask me!

Best of luck, I'm back in the PCOS forum every now and then so hope to see good news really soon!

Nice to hear success stories girls - good for pma!! Good luck with your pregnancy Princess!

Hope - hope you enjoyed grand national. Went to bookies with girls and then watched in on plasma screen in friend's garden with pear cider and bubbly - lots of fun!! Didn't win anything and one of my horses was that moody one that wouldn't let the jockey on then refused to start!! How did you get on?!

As for my appointment, I was expecting clomid but consultant has decided to give me a laparoscopy with ovarian drilling.

When he told me I was very 'yeah, that's great' etc... but got home and the fear hit. I went online to research it and burst into tears. Luckily I have a good friend who has had a laparoscopy so somebody to talk to. But it just feels so serious now.....

Well at least it should get rid of some of these cysts - apparently I really have quite a lot of them!

Other good news is that AF finally arrived - just a few hours after seeing consultant - lol! So first cycle off bcp was 150 days and second was 99. At least it's a fair improvement but I'm starting to think stress may be playing a big part here as one AF came at end of Christmas hols and one into the second week of Easter hols (I'm a teacher). Hmmmmmmmm..........????

    Anyways baby dust xx

mrsrobson - i think that stress always had an affect on mine as well - i am a teacher too. The more stressed my class made me the less af's i had until i went on metformin but even then af was always later during report time! good luck with your procedure.

I'm also a teacher!! And I'm convinced that's somehow linked to my pcos.
Thank you for the stories about your pregnancies and little ones- it really does inspire me every time I hear how good things come to those who wait. Hope they are all keeping you busy.
Congratulations on your af mrsr I'm hoping next time it goes awol for so long it's because it's a bfp! I've been told ovarian drilling might be the next option for me too. It does sound scary on the surface but I suppose it's treating the problem directly rather than just trying to get round it- apparently it gives clomid a better chance of working too.

The national was great we had a lovely day and it gave me a chance to forget about ttc and helped me to start the term feeling less stressed. The met was fine then and despite upping the dose I seem to be handling it ok ( no stomach cramps etc this week... So fingers crossed). Thknk they are triggering af aches lower in my back too rather than just the usual ov pains xxx

Glad you enjoyed the race - must've been fab! And brilliant that you're getting on well with the metformin. About three weeks after starting it I had lower back pains for about 10 days but it went away so hopefully all will be fine. I think it's ok once you're used to it. My dose should be going up once I've had my op.
Definitely something in the whole job stress situation! Hope AF (or a BFP!!) shows up soon for you xx

I've had the odd day where it's played me up (but it's usually when I've had a sneaky drink haha).

I'm convinced I'm getting af-type pulling pains that sound like the ones you're describing and I've been on it for almost 2 weeks now so perhaps it's just another sideeffect.

Do you have a date for the op yet? xxx
  • Options
Hmmmmm...... Pains and cm and things like that are all so random with me - must be the PCOS - it's just impossible to find a pattern so I'm almost ignoring them really. I've just in the last month started charting my temperature so we'll see how that works out!
Have to ruing next week to book op - will let you know!
    H xx
