Surely it shows the child is already an apt problem solver if he can already figure out the answer by whatever means come easiest to him? That's how I was always taught! As written the teachers seem a little too pedantic. The child should be allowed to figure it out for himself rather than be force fed 'the correct method' like a pigging robot!!!
