  • Hi Dr Dawn Harper

My q is about fertility tests/treatment - me and my partner have been trying for our first baby for about 6/7 months now. I am 37 so I'm wondering if we should start considering taking tests and looking into ivf or other options because I'm older? Or should we keep trying (and hoping) for a bit longer?!!!

Also, any fertility tips fo women in their late 30's?

    Thanks so much x
  • Hi!

I'm finding it harder to get pregnant the second time round. I've read about how important it is to have sex when you're ovulating but how will I know when this is and Is it easy to spot the signs? And when is it best to have sex... jsut before you start ovulating or during. I'm trying to be as accurate as possible. Ha!

    Thanks,

  • Hello Lalalove19

It is probably worth having a chat with your GP as you are 37. Normally we say that couples should try for 12 months but your GP will probably be happy to run sone blood tests for you now just to check things out

    Best wishes

  • Hello wonderwoman47

You could try using a fertility monitor to help you predict your fertile days and we recommend that you have sex every couple of days around the tine of ovulation to maximise your chances if conceiving. If your cycle is regular you can predict ovulation as it will be 14 days before your next period is due but if your cycle is not clockwork, the fertility monitor will help

  • Hello Lalalove19

Sorry, I forgot to say, start taking a colic acid supplement and aim for a healthy Body Mass Index (18.5-25) to maximise tour chances of conceiving. Yu might also like to use a fertility monitor to help you predict your fertile days

    I meant FOLIC acid! Sorry
  • Hi Dr. Dawn, web editor here...

I think it would be great if you could remind us all of the kind of diet you should think about having to help boost fertility - especially with Christmas just around the corner. Are there any particular foods to avoid that may reduce the chances of conceiving, or any things you should be piling high on your Christmas dinner plate?!

    Thanks,

  • Hello wedEd

Anyone planning a pregnancy needs to think about a well balanced diet containing all the food groups. It's certainly not a time to omit whole food groups or try a fad diet. You should limit your alcohol intake a obviously if you smoke, you should try to give up. Zinc and selenium are thought to be good for fertility. For a list if foods rich in these visit www.foodstandards.gov

It's also a good idea to get into the habit of avoiding foods that you should avoid when you are pregnant namely unpasteurised cheeses, pate, peanuts raw eggs and liver

  • Hi, my son is 16 mnths. I am still bfeeding and my period has not started again since giving birth. We have started trying for the next one but I was wondering what the chance of getting pregnant is with bfeeding/no period? I am 37. Thx
  • Hello Basjan123

I'm a little confused. Are you saying that you have been bleeding constantly since giving birth 16 months ago? If that is the case you should see your GP who will look into this for you and give you some medication to help settle things down.

    Best wishes

  • No, sorry, didn't make myself clear. I haven't had a period yet since giving birth. Was told it has not returned as I am still breastfeeding.
  • Hello Basjan123

Breastfeeding can delay the restarting of periods but at 16 months your son will be on solids and therefore you will be producing less milk. It is probably worth going back to your GP who may arrange some blood tests to check your hormones. It is also possible that you are pregnant already so you may want to do a home pregnancy test just to check that out.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Dr_Dawn_Harper,

We have been TTC for 18 months now, I'm 30 and my husband is 31. I've had blood tests done which were fine, DH has has 2 sperm test done which both showed low sperm morphology only 2% and 5% although all other results were within the WHO guidelines. Does this mean we will definitely need fertility treatment? My husband is waiting to have his 3rd sperm test and the wait to see a specialist is going to be 6 months so we're thinking of going private. Is there anything that can improve sperm morphology?

    Thanks
