My baby girl has had a bleed on the brain

My beautiful baby Girl Isabel who was born on 2nd September 08 has had a bleed on the brain, the nuero consultant is convinced it didn't happen in delivery (we had a traumatic birth) but are unsure what has caused it.

She has been for an MRI and that still hasn't given us any answers, we do not know what the long term effects of this as the baby brain is very intelligent and could compensate for any damage. But it could also leave her with learning difficulties.

She has just gone seven weeks and she isn't yet following us with her eyes around the room or smiling if we talk to her, as first time parents unsure if this is just her late development or to do with the bleed.

She is being monitored on weekly basis (& daily by us) by consultants to ensure fluid isn't building up on brain.

Just wondered if anyone else has a similar experience with this.

We are still really in a daze about all this as I was so careful all through pregnancy and was so happy when she was born (as i thought she was going to be a boy!)

Any replies would be appreciated.

  • Dear Claire & Izzy,
I am so sorry to hear about your troubles. None of mine had any similar complecations but I did have 2 who where in special care with quite serious problems that could cause learning delays. All I can advise is to do what I was told to do, enjoy every minute with your baby as the time flies past so quickly, you blink and they are toddlers!!, and take each day at a time. You will worry over everything but try to enjoy lots of cuddles and make some YOU time, even if its just a soak in the bath.
Hope you get more information and will be thinking about you, try to stay positive [ although a good rant and a good cry can also do you the world of good]

  • Hello Claire and Izzy,
I am not yet a Mum but thought I would let you know about my cousins baby William as he had a bleed on the brain. William was born via a C section as he was breach. He was discharged in great health. He did not gain alot of weight after he was born, his head looked quite large compared to his body and he was pale. After investigations they found he had a bleed on the brain and fluid was building up.
They think when they tried to turn him before he was born to try and avoid a c-section that they may have damged a valve at the back of his head. The doctors talked about shunts to drain of the fluid and operations etc to correct this problem. It was a very stressful time and William was not a happy little guy. To cut a long story short Williams own body corrected the damged valve and he got better on his own and is now in perfect health and a normal lively 2 year old. The doctors were amazed but it shows how amazing the human body can be.
I hope this story gives you hope that things will be ok.
Lots of good wishes to you and Izzy.

  • Hi 2ZE

Thank you so much for your reply, even though Izzy has a blockage it is not causing any fluid to build up, so we are having regular head measurements taken to monitor this, otherwise they talked about drains etc.

It is so good to hear a positive story for a change as all we have received so far (not from here) from other people are horror stories. i'm just hoping and praying that we are as lucky as william.

Hope all goes well with you

    Kindest regards

  • My son's delivery was normal without using any tools and was a full term 7.6 lbs baby. No issues that we noticed on the day of and next day when we came home until we noticed him having siezures. We ran to the emergency and there he was diagnosed with blood hemorrhage in left front side of his brain. There was blood in fuild between brain and outerside as well. The hospital treated him with the siezure medications and was under close watch for head measurement for any more damage. He was on ventilation for a week and on top of that after he was desaturating. No one is able to identify the cause of it. Luckily it was started to heal by itself. By 6 months all the blood was gone and it was just a bit swollen. Just like all other babies his milestones are reaching how its suppose to be and now he is a handful, smart, and lovely kid.

Hope your little princess is much better now as she is much older. Can you please let me know how she would behave as in personality wise? Is she walking and talking fine?

Our prayers are with these little angles.

  • Hi, i have a baby boy, born at 25 weeks, he is prem. but he started to smile when he was 8 months but he cant sit or crowl or walk and he is 11 months. i took him to physio and specialist. he is going to crech now to play with other kids and he is doing fine since he is started the crech. now he can smile and say " mbrrr" and laugh, the creches also helps our children, because when he is at home he cant hear loader noise and other kids voices can help a lot.   i wont give up because he is developing slow. i understand your situation becuase is similar to mine.

  • I would like to tell all of you that whenever anything unusual happens to an otherwise healthy baby, you MUST look at the connection to vaccines. My grand-daughter bled in her brain and had a stroke and we did not know why. After many tears and many books, articles and correspondence with dedicated physicians, we learned that the antibiotics in vaccines can cause destruction of vitamin K (which is essential for proper blood clotting). The antibiotics destroy the gut flora which disables the vitamin K production thus putting the infant into harm's way. Most pediatricians are clueless and even if they knew they would not tell you since nearly every doctor has been brainwashed into accepting vaccines as good - trust me they are not. You don't have to take my word for it, research it yourself. Go to www.nvic.org or simply google vaccine injury. I pray every day that more parents will awaken to the truth about vaccines. Nothing will awaken you faster than seeing your beloved grand-daughter near death. God bless and keep your babies safe!

  • My daughter was born with a right frontal brain hemorrhage with no known cause to date. I had a healthy pregnancy and a normal birth. We are going to pediatricians and developmental follow up clinic as well as MRIs ad meetings with neurologists to monitor her and try to find a cause.

I jut find it so difficult somedays. She seems to be developing normally hitting all her milestones but I can't help but feel guilt. As though there was something g I could have done differently to prevent this from ever happening to her. I am terrified to have another baby for feat of having the same thing happen.

I just need some insight into how your children are developing. If you had unanswered questions that were eventually answered. If there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Or if you have words of wisdom or comfort.
  • my daughter was born with a level 1 brain bleedfreshen is myy 4th child, only c section.  They don't know why she had the brain bleed but when she was born she went to the NICU right away for a cooling procedure which In essence gave her hypothermia store dice the effects of the bleeding.  She is now 5 weeks old and seems to be tracking with the normal milestones.  We saw our neurologist last week and he said only time will tell but she looks good now.  We go to a developmental specialiat next week.  I agree with a lot of the post, I try to live in today and the blessing that my daughter is alive and well today.  I also wabout about the future as well and would like to find out how everything turned out for you and your families.  Sincerely

  • Hi I gave birth to a 24 week old baby girl who is in NICU since last 3 weeks, she has suffered grade 4/5 bleed on left side and garde 2 on rt side with ventricles enlarging very much on rt side and causing the brain to sqoosh while the left side is almost completely damaged leaving a hole and a slight rim of brain. she is off ventilator breathing on her own via minimal support of CPAP, tolerating feeds via mouth tube, had 7 transfusions, but doing so well that Drs are amazed . about her brain bleeds they tell me most likely she will have severe disability, in wheel chair, may not talk, walk, see or hear. would be like a vegetable. any hopes, any good stories of survival. pls reply.

  • hello all, today is one of the worst days as I have been thinking what wrong I did to go into this early labor and finally I think I have solved the mystery. I went thru the whole week's detail b/f my lovely daughter was born and although I had GBS and this could contribute to it as well, yes I has SI 3 days b/f I went into labor but the main thing was the huge craving for a traditional food called haleem which is like a porridge made from wheat, barley and other lentils, kind of harrisa. I ate that on wed 3 times, then on Thursday 3 times and Friday twice. the only sign of labour I had was huge pressure in my rectum. Like I was constipated. Now today I googled barley and pre term labour I found out that it causes labour and enzyme in it relaxes uterus, I am devastated, I am ready to kill my self knowing that I am the cause of my daughter's early birth , severe grade 4/5 bleed and potential severe disabilities, how will I forgive myself, my husband says it meant to be but I know now its me my craving which caused this.....now all my life I will see my disabled daughter and know its me who caused it.

  • hi all, my son had a bleed in his left tjalmus at 5 wks, he had a total of 13 seizures before medication stopped them. now hes 27 wks and thriving. his last mri shows "focal residual atrophy" which were to discuss at his appointment with neurology in september.so far hes met all his milestones. hes very alert and interactive but im worried about language and epilepsy.. they dont know what caused the bleed. i wrack my brain trying to find a reason. ultimatley my son needs me now, torturing myself wont help him or my family. our babies need us.

  • Hi ladies, I'm 32 weeks. Everything was fine until my last scan (last friday). My ob just found that my son had blood outside of this brain and that the size of his head is measuring 2 weeks ahead of the rest of the body. He also have his celebral median line pushed towards the right side (i dnt know if this makes sense to you guys...) I keep crying and don't know what to think or do about it. The doctors keep telling me that it's not my fault but I can't stop feeling guilty. I'm really confused about my son's future health... I'm having hard time to realize what's happening since everything was JUST fine until now.

  • Hi samantha, I hope ur ok- it is a great shock when these things happen, but if theres one thing my son has taught me its adversity makes us stronger. Its so hard to think of our little ones suffering or that our dreams of what they be doesnt seem to match reality anymore. . As u havent had ur little one yet i'd try to find out as much as possible about ur baby's condition and see if u can prepare urself for any differences or extra support he may need. I breastfed and I know its designed for a growing brain..hav u considered breastfeeding? I'm not sure of any lasting damage to my son yet- he seems to b fine at the mo but bcos the left side of his brain was affected I'm doing simple sign language with him (I work supporting adults with intellectual disabilities) . My job has prepared me in sum ways and terrified me in others. We get thru each second, minute and hour, day etc and its just like that wen things arent wat u expected. Im sure ur baby is beautiful and that u both will rise to any challenge. Try and stay positive and happy in ur pregnancy- ask loads of questions and write them down before u meet the experts and dont feel silly asking them to keep clarifying stuff for u if u need that. I no ur worried sick as I was too. Let me no how ur getting on and all my thoughts r with u.image
  • Id love to know how all the babies who had a bleed on their brain r getting on, my son is now 7.5 mths and is very alert and happy, hes still on an anti convulsant medicine but hasnt had any more seizures since those initial ones. Hopefully the damage that was done wont affect him as he develops. The doctors hav no idea how the bleed happened and I look at photos of when he was tiny and cry wondering if I could hav changed anything but we can only move forward. image
