Has there been measles in your area?

We have had a warning notice from B's school and U's nursery that children there have had measles. Chid's S has measles and it jsut seems to be more apparent atthe moment. Or is it just in my area?

  • Yes we had a letter from the nursery that said the number of local cases was high, can't remember the exact figures though.

How scary. I don't know why people won't vaccinate now, and then innocent babies below the vaccination age are more at risk. It makes me so cross.

  • And there's people like me that can't keep immunitySad

  • Quite a few in work but tbh I wouldn't say its an increase but what has shocked me this year is the huge increase in whooping cough. One of my colleagues daughter was 3 weeks and was admitted with whooping cough he said it was extremely scary

My best friend when I was little died from this. What are the symptoms?

  • Apparently there's a big increase in measles in certain pockets of the country. Only area close to us is Surrey. Not heard of any cases locally, or whopping cough actually but I shall certainly be getting my vaccination in a couple of weeks.

  • mixture of reasons, one is that there are lots of children unvaccinated because if that mmr nonsense about ten years ago and the other is immigration - there are now a large number of people of all ages living here that weren't ever vaccinated.   it just goes to show that you can't be complacent about vaccination, if you stop doing it the diseases come back.  bit like dandruff shampoo...

  • That scares the life of out me CP, as I can't have the injection for WC, so have the make the agonising decision as to whether we give it E or not.

I am in your area I guess QI but don't know anyone with measels, chicken pox however, is currently rife amoungst the little babies on camp!

  • Stupid question but is it still possible for children to catch measles once they've been vaccinated?

  • Why can't E  have it LM? Are you allergic? That doesn't mean she will be, they tend to keep them in the gp surgery to observe for a while after their imms anyway so if she did have a reaction then she woukd be in a health care environment. I wouldn't think twice about giving her it, can you speak to the gp?

Some people (like meWave) can be vaccinated and not hold immunity. You only know if you are tested (for whatever reason) to see if you've had immunity or if you catch it. We need soemthing like a 90% vaccination rate to protect the rest.

  • CP - I had some kind of very severe reaction as a child, which resulted in 10 days in hospital afterwards. We've had 2 specialists review my docs to give an opinion, one said no to me having it while pregnant and no to E having it while the second said I shouldn't have it but to give it to E. When my brother came along my mom was advised not to give it him. I've had the reasons for the recommendations explained and my doctor has of course promised support if we go ahead, we'll be kept in surgery for the day.

I feel, i'd rather deal with a reaction than have E worried for the rest of her life but there is a doubt there whenever my mom tells me what happened to me or moreso what could have happened, I won't go into it as my case is very very rare and I don't want to needlessly put anyone off but its scary stuff.

  • We are on the edge on one of the pockets of measles cases in sussex. P is 1 in 2 weeks and i will be booking in her MMR ASAP.

Does anyone know how soon after their first birthday they can have it?

  • AR - Es red book just says 12-13 months so i'd assume that means right after.

  • I heard through work (children's centre)  that where you are, QI, there are a high number of cases at the moment. Durham isn't too far behind either.

  • We have also had scarletina, slapped cheek, threadworms, nits and oh so many other warnings come home. Manky lot round hereLaugh
