It's a great point to raise as car seat use can be very confusing, so it is really important to clarify how to use the seat safely.

The Joie Bold is a forward-facing seat that is used with the 5-point harness from 9-18kg (approx 9 months to 4 years).

Then when your child weighs between 15-25kg (approx 3-6years) it can be used with either the 5-point harness, or using the car seat belt.

From 22kg-36kg (approx 6-12 years) it is used with the car seat belt.

These Joie Bold installation instructions outline the use - but if you have any more concerns it is definitely worth checking with a trusted and reputable car seat fitting service.

  • Thank you so much for replying. This is very confusing however I'm pretty sure that the harness is still only meant for use until 18kg. I asked Joie recently if they made any forward facing seats with a higher weight limit on the harness than 18kg and they said they didn't and that after 18kg the three point belt should be used.
  • although granted that could well have been before this seat came out. Why they're bringing out forward facing seats from 9kg I'll never know. They're going backwards!
  • Hi, I bought the britax advansafix 2 car seat that has extended 5 point harness to 25kg which is roughly 6 years old. Unfortunately I had to convert to the 3 point harness way before this when he was 4 years old because of his height (he is average height for his age) due to t position of the shoulder straps. My question is therefore which of the car seats you have recommended will also allow growth in height? Thank you
  • Hi Sarah Morgan2, thanks for your question we get this query more often than you’d think. It’s frustrating as you’d think a harness up to 25kg would last longer. We have an article on car seats for tall kids, they go beyond the UK legal limit of 135cm and some even up to 160cm tall, which we hope will help.

  • Hi there. I've messaged you but not sure if it worked. I'm concerned that it states on here that the Joie Bold can use the forward facing harness to 25kg when it is infact 18kg.
