Got a question for Maternity Minister Dr Dan Poulter? Post it here!

Hello.

Dr Dan Poulter, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health and Minister for Maternity, is going to be answering questions from MFMers at the end of this month.

So... what would you like to ask him?

His remit includes maternity, midwifery, children's health and patient experience, so if you have any questions about maternity care, midwife shortages, childhood vaccinations, healthcare for children – or anything else – now's the time to put them to the man in charge!

Just post your question on this thread – and we'll post up his answers in due course.

Dr Poulter also practises part-time as an NHS hospital doctor, specialising in obstetrics, gynaecology and women's health.

  • Dr Poulter, I want to ask you about childbirth.

I've been reading that all pregnant women are going to be encouraged give birth at home or in a midwife unit, rather than in hospital.

But I keep reading about midwife shortages, too.

Will there be enough midwives to go round if more of us are going to give birth at home?

  • I would like to add to the question from YellowP - there is a shortage now of midwives, when will there be enough to go round? And how will attract these midwives - are you going to pay them more? Improve conditions (they work odd hours!)?

  • Good morning Dr Poulter,

I am very concerned about the level of post natal care in the UK, women seem to be getting little informed information regarding delayed cord clamping, skin to skin, breast feeding, personal post natal care and emotional well being.

I have now heard that the natural form of post natal nutritional support (placenta consumption) is being banned across Europe. The EU FSA have categorised human placenta as novel food. This means that marketing of the product is now illegal. Placenta encapsulation is not a buying/selling of a placenta as it is just paying someone for the service that they provide in processing the placenta in to a palatable form.

Can you please tell me if you are going to support women on their personal postnatal journey?

Thank you in advance for your response.

  • Dr Poulter. Thank you for agreeing to answer our questions.

I'd like to ask about miscarriage care. My friend suffered a miscarriage recently and said she had to wait for her scan in a room full of pregnant women. It upset her a lot.

Can't the government can do something to stop this kind of thing happening? It's so unkind.
