I reckon hospital births are terrifying, I very rarely hear from any of my friends that they had a good experience of birth when in hospital. I had both of my babies at home & it was very calm & relaxing, in fact, my 2nd baby arrived in such a hurry that she was in my arms 10 minutes before the midwife arrived & at no point did I feel scared... it was wonderful. I think as long as you are well prepared, calm & realistic, then it doesn't have to be terrifying. You're in familiar surroundings, and very much in control at home. I know that it's not for everyone though, but wouldn't the world be dull if we were all the same
