Advice on smoking

Hello everyone so I’m 4 weeks and a few days. Found out I was pregnant 3 days ago. Anyway I’m a heavy smoker and will happily admit that, had a chat to my DR today and adviced I obviously stop. I smoked with my son when I was 15 ( young and niaeve)  he’s fit and well and was born a perfect weight, I want to and need to quit, but I’m just not sure how or if I will be able to, I’ve tried paches that dr gave me but unfortunately I’m allergic. I’m just finding it so hard to come to the fact to stop as I’ve been smoking for a good 5 years now! Any advice and tips would be great Thankyou

  • Maybe try cut down. So if you smoking 10 a day, cut down to 8 for a day or 2 then down to six for a day then 5 etc etc. Try wean yourself off. I've heard that is the best way if you don't have the will power to stop cold turkey.

Thankyou that’s a good idea I will try that!
  • There are many ways you can use to motivate yourself to quit smoking. I would like to advise you to use all the ways that you find possible. Here are different ways that you can use to quit smoking and motivate yourself on continuing the habit of not smoking.

    1. Hang with positive people: these are friends who will continue to encourage you not to smoke. They will encourage you to stick to the habit of not smoking. It becomes easy when you are with these people who will help you when you feel uneasy about quitting. Tell them that you want to quit so that they can help.
    2. Find something to do with your hands: hands work in the same way with an idle mind. An idle mind is the devil’s workshop. Idle hands will also tempt you to smoke again. You can use games, chat on the telephone with engaging people, or even play games such as puzzles.
    3. Minimize stress if you can: there are different activities that you can do to minimize stress in your life as much as possible. In this world, it is impossible to completely live a life without stress. You can do activities like yoga to relieve that stress. This is because many people smoke because of stress.
    4. Chew gum or eat snacks: the brain feels like it needs to do something every time. This is the reason why when many people are idle decide to smoke. Finding other things to replace this like chewing gums is very helpful.
  • @Lauren465 when you smoke, you temporarily restrict the flow of oxygen to your baby.  This causes them unnecessary distress.  Perhaps use that knowledge as real motivation to quit?  As well as wanting to maintain your health and quality of life so you can be there for your children into your old age.  (My father died of a massive heart attack at age 59, the primary cause was smoking.) Quit or this insidious habit will take you far too young too.  Since having children, your life is no longer your own.  You owe it to them.

Patches are only one tool available to help you with nicotine addiction.  Hypnosis is certainly something to consider.  Vaping can alleviate the cravings.  Research the options and go an see an addiction specialist.  It’s tough, but you CAN quit.  Good luck!

Thankyou for replying and I’m sorry to hear about you dad, I really want to quit more than anyone will know. I’ve already signed up to stop smoking and they are sending resources out this week coming. I’m going to ask my midwife on vaping as won’t that be just as bad? Many thanks again
