No Midwife

Hi Girls,
I was just wondering how regularly people are seeing their mw's. I only ask because im 26wks and have only seen a mw once and that was at my booking in back in november. Iv not had my tummy measured, iv not heard babies heart beat and iv not bin checked over at all. My scans were done by sonographers and my bloods were taken by nurses, so there could be anything wrong for all the mw's know. The worse thing is im not even supposed to see my mw until im 28wks but this seems like a huge amount of time the last time I saw a mw (20wk). Im feeling abit like im on my own and that im not building up a relationship with any mw like mums-to-be are supposed to. Anyone else having this problem? Kerry xxx

  • Hey Kerry, I don't think that is right. I saw my mw at by booking in appointment at 7 weeks, then again at 16, 24, and today for my 28 week check. I then see her at 30, 32, 34 and then everyweek up till the birth. If I was you I would ring up and find out whats going on. I am sure lo is ok but it is reassuring to hear the heartbeat every few weeks even though I am getting kicked all the time, lol.

  • Hi Kerry,

I have a similar situation - I am seeing my midwife on Friday for the first time since my booking in appointment - I have a lot of questions! We have not heard the heartbeat either. My scans were done by sonographers and my 16 week check was with my GP and he did an ultrasound instead of checking for heartbeat. But this is just how my surgery work it so the pressure is kept of the midwives. Saying that I can always make an appointment to see one if I need to - if you are worried could you not make an appointment?

  • I have asked about this and the snotty receptionists told me thats just the system in this area and gave me a sheet that tells me wen i need to book and see community mw. The sheet says:
-25 Weeks (if first baby) OR 28 Weeks (if second baby)
    - and then 31 Weeks (if first baby) OR 34 Weeks (if second baby)
    - then 36 Weeks
    - then 38 Weeks
    - then 40 Weeks
    - then every seven days until u have the baby
Because this is my second baby i will only see mw at 28wks, 34wks, 36wks, 38wks and 40wks. Wat does it matter if its ur second baby each pregnancy is different. Kerry xxx

  • I saw my midwife at 8 weeks for booking in, had bloods done by the woman who does it lol ( long word, fecked if i know) and I have seen her once routine since and one emergency when i had no movements.
I see her again on the 1st when I will be 2 days off being 21 weeks.
  • thats awful, i'd defo complain because if the system means that mothers to be are becoming worried, then the system obviously isn't working!! xxx

  • Mind you, having said that about my midwife. Despite having no movements, and baby being a loittle cow about being listened to, it took 25 mins, they didn't want to see me till my routine appt.

    AND

the last 2 days I ahve had blood in my wee, and cramps. I rang my EPU and they just said "oh sounds like a wee infection, go to your doctor"
  • i think it varies depending on where you live.

    I have seen my m/w 3 times.
    first booking
when she come to house to complete forms
downs screening (whcih is a choice thing)
25 wks and now im seeing her again at 28 wks.

i dont really mind cos i dont like her anyway - lol. when baby is born its going to be hospital midwifes anyway and they can change from one day to the next, depending on shift rota etc (or so im told).

i wouldn't worry if anything was wrong you body would tell you in one way or another, but if you are just ring him and make an appointment. this is my first and if i ever get a bit worried about anything just tell myself women have been doing this for years so it can be that hard - but thats just me, (optamistic and very easy going about the whole thing) - i know for some that is easier said that done.
  • Im not worried about anything in particular but just keep thinking that even if something was wrong, wud it be de-dected? I no im been abit irrational but i dnt remember this with my last pregnancy and was hoping i wasnt the only one who has little contact with mw. Oh well like you said flower 811 my body wud tell me if there was something wrong and im only round the corner from the ante-natal unit if there was a problem. Kerry xxx

  • I saw my old community mw for my booking in (got told to fill in the same paper work at my drs before hospital) think it was mw i saw at booking in i can't remember but then she asked me if it was possible for me to change surgery's, something to do with the way the community mw operate!! but till i was 22 weeks i didnt see anyone apart from sonographers for my dating scan (13+2) & anomly scann (about 20weeks) seeing a mw regularly now though but the normal lady i see has been off ill so i've had different ones these past 2 appts. Not sure if it'd make any differance as to whether they class you as high or low risk though coz i was classed as low risk image & still am so fingers crossed bp behaves!

  • It's coz your an experienced second time mum Kerry!! I am in exactly the same position, I last saw my midwife at 18 weeks and I am seeing her again next week (28 weeks) I think they just take it for granted that if you have done it before you know what is normal. I guess if you are worried you could make an extra appointment. I'm actually quite glad I haven't got that many appointments as taking Millie with me is a pain!

  • I think its quite rediculous of them to think that because we have already had babies we will be ok! I am on my 3rd but because my second wadsx slightly prem and I also had to have labour stopped at 33 weeks they are seein me a bit more often!.

All 3 of my pregnancies have been different and they already have concerns for this one coming early.

I had my booking in at 13 weeks, then consultant at 16 got signed off from then, had next midwive appointment at 19 weeks now I will see her again next friday when I will be 25 weeks.

I do think that they should have nationwide standards and every maternity unit and midwive department run the same with the same guidelines to when you are seen. I have noticed how each area is completely different. (sorry for rant)

  • I saw mine at 12 weeks booking and i wont be seen again until i'm 25 weeks - this is my first baby and according to my maternity notes i should be seen for my second appt at 20 weeks but they are so busy they couldn't fit me in til four weeks later....

think this is what they call they postcode lottery!
  • Hi i have a son that i think is around the same age as yours and i will be seeing my mw when im 24+6, then every 4 weeks up til 36 weeks then every 2 weeks. I last saw the mw at my booking in appointment when i was 4 weeks. x
  • This is how my appointments have gone and it's my first!
    10 weeks
    16 weeks
    20 weeks
    25 weeks
    28 weeks
    31 weeks
    34 weeks
    36
    38
    40
etc...and then every week if u go overdue and be induced at 40+13 at the latest.
It seems to be about the same as mine tbh except I have had more appointments early on? I don't know why you haven't, as you say every pregnancy is different and being a 2nd timer has nothing to do it. You might have been healthy first time round but not necessarily second! Sorry don't mean to worry you Kerry, I am sure everything is fine but you know what I mean.
I must admit I expected to be seeing mw every week now, rather than every 2, but I dont mind at all. xxxx

  • Thanks girls i just think that my area is so stretched for mw and have too many patients to see to. I just find it really odd that i dnt see anyone between 8 and 28wks. Oh well nearly at 28wks suppose it has made the pregnancy go abit quicker as iv not had to bother about any appt. Kerry xxx
  • Hi Kerry,

I've just posted about this in 'my baby is due in June 08' forum!

This is my first baby and I had my first appointment about 10/11 weeks and my next appointment is at 28 weeks! I had three blood tests on the first appointment and have had two scans and one appointment with a consultant because of a pre-existing back condition.

The other ladies who kindly replied to my post said this was a long gap and i've just found out that for first time mums the appointment system should be 16, 18-20, 25, 28, 31, 34, 36, 38, 40 and also at 41 weeks. In essence, I've missed out on three appointments.

For second time mums the appointment system should be , 18-20, 28, 34, 36, 38 and 41 weeks!

You don't happen to live in the North East do you?

I don't know what to do about it because I don't want to seem pushy and feel a bit vulnerable to be honest. :\?
