What is the superstition about having your pram at home?

Hi Ladies,

What am I missing here? Why is it superstitious to have your pram in your home before the baby is due?

Thanks

  • Old wives tale about it being bad luck!
  • In fact, it pertains to the majority of stuff for the baby, i.e. the cot etc. Bit unfortunate for those 2nd, 3rd, 4th babies etc who were conceived with it in the house in the attic or wherever then!!

  • I don't know where the old wive's tale originates from but everyone I speak to says it's bad to luck to have your pram in your house before baby is born. I'm going to ignore it though, as many of us have!! I can't see how having a pram in the house is going to cause problems with baby! (Oh I hope not anyway, gulp!!) xxxx

  • My dad wouldn't let me have the pram in the house and has stored it at his home. I'm happy about that as we have serious lack of space here but told him that it was wise it was at his house down to superstition etc!!! I have the cot up and made, the moses basket up and made so can't see why having the pram would be any different!!!

  • We have the pram at out house plus everything else, to be honest don't have anywhere else to have it! Both sets of parents live over an hour from us (which is great) so it would be a mad dash to get it all here. Plus I like playing with things and it was so fab getting the clothes sorted! There sooooo cute!!! Tammi xxx

  • MIL lost one of her babies when she went past the 6 month stage and she thinks it's because someone gave her a shawl to wrap the baby in when he was born! She's obsessed with old wives tales and things (personally i think she's insane!) She just needed something to blame for the loss of her baby, when it's nothing and no one's fault it happened. She's got bad OCD too. Sad really.

  • hia,
i was really paranoid about having all the stuff in the house because of stupid wives tales but i didnt have anywhere else i could put them so had to have it all at home. i had a very short labour and birth and a very healthy baby that was born on his due date!! xxx
  • I've got my pram at home already, but i have had my mother in law going on and on about it being here. i've also started buying things now for the new baby now i'm over 12 weeks.
I mean can i really get punished for thinking about my baby and wanting to get things in advance instead of rushing around at the end of the pregnancy.
With my first daughter (12 yrs ago tomorrow...hehe). I had my mother in law insist on keeping the pram there, then with my other 2 babies i had the pram at my own home and they were healthy, beautiful babies. I don't believe in it!!!
    Sorry to rabbit on..lol.

  • We have everything at home, got pram and nursery stuff after 25 weeks, and everything else just as and when. It really is up to you how you feel about that, I certainly wouldn't worry about it.

  • I think it basically just started because back in the day things were more likely to go wrong. It was kinda a practical thing more then anything, no good having a pram if something has gone wrong....but then again Im not sure-thats just what Ive always assumed it to be
