Going back to work by choice

Hi girls,
Just curious to know if anyone has or is planning to go back to work not just for the money?? What i mean is, financially, although it would be tough its not essential for me to go back to work but i really am thinking of finding a part time job for my own interests and because i think it would be good for Callum. Just wondering if anyone else feels this way or whether i m a bad mummy for wanting to do something else as well. I'm only thinking 20 hours a week and i think it would be good for him to be able to play without getting bored at home with me cos i've got housework to do.

Would you work if you didn't have to....????:\?

  • Hi I dont have to work as hubby amkes enough to support us and I didn't work though my . Lately I have been thinking though once Jamie is realiably going through the night. I'd like to get a night job about 15-20 hrs per week. Just as something for myself and money for a rainy day. I want night as then hubby wont have to do much with jamie and I don't think he'd cope on his own. if I worked in the day. main reason he wont change nappies!!
So no I don't think your a bad mummy. In fact if it would make you feel better by working then I think that would make you a better mummy. As long as LO is happy to while your away. x

  • GGGrrrrrrrrr- it ate my 1st reply!!!!

YES- I'd def work even if I didn't need to. I crave intelligent conversation and have even been into work most weeks since I started my mat leave !! I am soooo sad....
I think it's nice to have a bit of independence too and would hate being totally reliant on my OH even if he earned mega bucks.
  • I agree, I think it's good to have a break from the lo and enjoy some adult company. It's also good for our lo's to have a break from us! Finding a suitable job and childcare is the issue though...
  • i have no choice but to go back full time but if money was no issue i would still go back part time - maybe 3 days a week. I have worked hard to get where i am at my age especially since i only lasted 6 weeks at sixth form. I also qualify next year after 8 years of study. I would hate to give it all up. I also think socialising with other children is good for them. I cant imagine dropping her off at school at 4 and thats the first time she has been in that situation. Must be a bit traumatic for them.
  • I went back when Nathan was 6 months old (he's 9 months now). Longer term I would have needed to go back but I still had over 3 months maternity pay due so I could have stayed off longer. Even now I refer to my days at work as my "days off".

For me it was really important to get back, partly as I work in Mortgages and so with the recession I have to really show commitment in order to secure my job but also because I missed talking about anything other than babies and needed more mental stimulation. I work with mainly men so there is very little baby talk at work, lol.

My mum was a single parent and she always worked so to me it is what mums do, I was always really surprised when friends mums didnt work when we were younger as kids you tend to assume that your way is the only way. Its working really well for us, I enjoy Nathan more and he loves nursery.

So no, I dont think it makes you a bad mum, we all do what makes us happier as we're better mummies when we're happy! :\) .
  • Thank you for your honesty ladies, its good to know i'm not the only one that could do with a bit of stimulation and a bit of a break from bambino, i would love to say i am an earth mother but although i love him dearly, that's not the case!!! Seems crazy now cos when i was getting ready to go on maternity leave i couldn't wait to be at home and now i am missing work!!! It is true that finding a job and childcare is a complete nightmare - i can't believe how rubbish the government is about childcare in this country! Although, i got a flyer through the door today from a recruitment agency today specialising in part time careers for women - spooky coincindence????!!! Anyway, I think its true that its good for some mums and not others, i think it will be good for Callum to have people that are paid to play with him and like some of you said mix with other children. Thanks ladies x x
