mint tea dries up breast milk

hi
My lo is 14 weeks and is breast fed. My milk seems to be reducing in quantity. Read somewhere this week that mint tea will dry up breast milk. It made me panic 'cos I've drunk a lot of mint tea to help digestion (worse as taking iron tablets). I suppose when the time comes to wean lo off the breast, then I would drink mint tea again. But in the mean time, does anyone know what food or drink can help boost breast milk?

  • Hi Gina

Yes, peppermint tea is an old old homeopathic remedy to help weaning mothers dry up their supply. Other "drying" herbs are spearmint, sage and parsley. Maybe try avoiding them for a few days and see if anything changes.

I've read your reply to the other thread on not enough milk. I hope it gets better soon as BF is a wonderful experience.

    Take care x

  • hi pixie_woo,

Thanks for your reply. I've stayed away from mint tea, but breast milk is still reducing (and only one is "working" - sorry tmi). Giving lo formula milk nearly all the time now, which also decreases stimulation for breast milk. This week I've started to give him mashed banana + baby rice in milk as he 's so hungry.

Yes, BF is wonderful experience and I tried very hard to keep going, despite soreness, blocked duct, mum and mil saying don't bother, etc. I'll keep going until lo is 6 months, if I can.
