Sugary drinks: should they be banned from all schools?

Hello everyone.

We've just been hearing that there's been a call for sugary drinks to be banned from all schools following the publication of new research suggesting they cause more childhood obesity than pizza, chocolate and chips.

In a new study of 11,000 Canadian pupils, researchers found that children in schools where fizzy drinks are available are more likely to be obese than children in schools where healthy-eating guidelines are more strictly enforced.

And that's why Tam Fry, child-obesity expert and chairman of Child Growth Foundation, has demanded that sugary drinks be banned from all UK schools.

"Children do not need anything other than water to refresh themselves," he says.

But what do you think?

Do you agree with Tam Fry and think schools should ban fizzy drinks? Or not?

  • To be honest I do agree. Kids don't need to have access to these extremely high sugar content drinks. Maybe restricting them to just water may be a bit heavy handed but I don't see there being an issue with them only having access to squash or fruit juices.

  • I agree with it, sugary drinks contain a lot of calories added with artificial flavours and color. It doesn’t have any nutritional value and at the same time can cause obesity. Luckily DD’s school doesn’t have them (http://www.sunnybrookschool.com/school-news/lunch-menu.html). They only provide mineral water. Also everyday there will be a seasonal fruit with the lunch.
