Advocating for Employee Maternity & Paternity Benefits

I am pregnant with my first child and my employer does not provide additional maternity and paternity financial benefits to parents on leave (other than what the government provides through statutory pay).

I was wondering if anyone here has advocated for these benefits in the workplace?  If so, how did you approach the situation with your employer, what strategies did you use and were were successful?
