IVF...entering into the unknown. Advice please?

Hi Ladies, apologies I'm new to this site and not really sure where to start! My hubbie and I have been TTC for 2 years now, we always knew we would have problems as 5 years ago he had Hodkins Lymphoma and there was always a possibility we would be left infertile. Unfortunately this was confirmed to us last September so we have been starting the long process of IVF. Fortunately he thought ahead and has a limited store of poor quality sperm from the beginning of his treatment, which we have been told it suitable for ICSI. We have had lots if tests (blood tests and untrasounds) at UCLH and have finally been referred to Hammersmith IVF unit for our initial consultation in March. I was wondering if anyone who has had treatment there would be able to advise me of their success and also of the time scale after initial appointment? Any advice would be very much appreciated, I feel a bit lost at the moment and would love to hear from anyone who is in the same boat as us? Thanks xxxx

  • Hi Hope, Why not have a look at the "Happy New Year 2014" thread on here as there are quite a few ladies who might be able to help you.  Including me!

Firstly, I would suggest to keep ringing them to check if the referral has gone off as mine took ages.  It's not the same area as I'm in Norfolk, but I had to chase them up a lot.

Next, I'd suggest getting down to the library to check out the information in the books - Kate Brian does a good one.

When you get your appointment at the clinic it may be a seminar which is an hours worth of powerpoint... then we had another appt a week later with a specialist who checked all the paperwork and details.  And have your dates for your periods with you (this year should suffice).  The meds have to start on day 21 (if the start of your period is day 1).  And a few days before day 21 you will have a nurse appointment to learn how to inject yourself in the belly image.

Hope that helps a bit - to start you off and not bombard you.  Gotta go now - if you want more, let me know and I'll write more (NOTE this is my experience only).

  • Hello,

Just wondering if anyone can help, this is my first time on a forum:

Me and my husband have our first appointment at guys hospital on Tuesday and I don't know what to expect.

My Husbands got a cancer gene running through his family that's why we enquired about PGD, we have to go through ivf anyway as I suffer with crohns disease in my ileum and had to have surgery which has resulted in my right fallopian tube being scarred and my fsh slightly high.
The hard part is they haven't done PGD on these gene before, so it can take up to 2 years investigation before we can actually start treatment and hope it works for us to have our family.

We don't know whether to wait or go down normal ivf .... does anyone know how long the waiting list is for normal ivf in Brighton area?
I'm just so emotionally and physically drained I just want our family. We have been trying naturally 2 years and started with the hospital this year time seems to be going so slow!!!

I hope someone has any advice to help.
Thank you for you time x
