Blocked tube :(

Hi all. Haven't posted in a while as I'm trying to take my mind off things but had my hsg and they say I have a blocked tube. OH has low count and poor motility so looks like we are going to start ivf soon. They are sending me for a laparoscopy and maybe a hysteroscopy. I'm not sure what this will show? They said that it means that they can get a better look but wondered if anyone knows what else it could be for?

We've decided to keep trying (and saving!) until October and then start ivf then. Only thing I'm a bit unsure of is how many appointments I should expect to have over the ivf cycle? I'm worried about taking the time off work in case they suspect and would be grateful if anyone can tell me how many times you have to go in?

Thanks in anticipation of your wise words. Although I'm not a regular poster on here I really appreciate the support you all offer and hope to be able to give back once we start our ivf journey! Xx

  • Hi, I had to have my right fallopion tube removed due to it being badly bloced, I had 2 weeks off for this operation. I can't remember exactly how many appointments we had for IVF roughly first consultation, folicle tracking scan, then we had one to go and collect and have the drugs explained to us. Once we had started the IVF you have scans every 2 to 3 days to check down regulation then to check the follicles these scans at my hospital were all at 7:30am. I told work that I had cysts on my overies that I was having monitored I then told them that I had them drained when I took 2 weeks off after the IVF, which you dont have to have off but I wanted to know I had done everything in my power to make it work. I also had acupuncture throughout I really beleve this helped. Acupuncture could help you both if your partner as low count.

Hope this helps good luck and be positive, I am now 35 weeks pregnant so it does work.

  • I too have just been diagnosed with a blocked tube and feel devaststed about it. I'm waiting for appt with gynae to discuss next steps so know what you're going through hun.

THinking bout you and let me know how you get on with next stage.

    Love Em J xx
  • Thanks annette for the info - really useful and good to hear about the acupuncture as we have already started a few sessions in preparation for the ivf. Congratulations on your success! Not long now til your due date! Appreciate the info and am looking forward to starting ivf after reading your post image

em j - thanks for your reply too. It is disappointing but try your best to look forward to what can be done to help. I felt very down for a few days after finding out and felt as if I was never going to get to be a mum but found the best way to get through the disappointments is to realise that there are luckily things like ivf to help. I recently told a really good friend about things (although not many people know and we are trying not to tell many people) but I'm so glad I did as it's great to have someone to call and chat to if you need to. Hope your gynae appoitment goes well and you can always mail me if you need someone to chat to! image

  • Just wanted to wish you both lots of luck, I know how your feeling xx

  • Thanks annette xx

Smiles- how are you honey? I have been told they are doing a lap and dye with me and just awaiting appt. Are you any further at the moment? xxx
  • Good luck with the lap and dye Em j, I am now overdue and dying to meet my baby xx
  • That is wonderful very best of luck to you xxx
  • Hi em j. I have my appointment on 18th sept and have booked our first Ivf consultation on 23rd sept. We are going on holiday on 25th for a week so trying to squeeze in the consultation after lap and before hols! Hoping to be able to start ivf oct/nov if possible. They told me I should get an appointment for the lap within 3 months and date works out as just about 3 months since referral. Let me know when you hear about your appointment. How are you feeling now?

Annette - hoping that baby doesn't keep you waiting much longer! Let us know how things go.

    Xx
  • Hi smiles,

Well I have my lap and dye appt for 3rd Sep, must admit absolutely dreading it as I've never been in hospital before and never had an anaesthetic! I'm also really worried as to what they'll find and hoping nothing else shows up. I'm also wondering if at all possible to unblock tube? Think I'll post a thread on ltttc and see if anyone knows.

I had to go to the hospital today for a routine pre op check and mrsa scan. I get so angry and peeved when I go as there are loads of pregnant women stood outside smoking and speaking to their OH with an abundance of swear words etc. GRRR makes me SO angry, life is so bloody unfair.

I just want to get the lap and dye over with and hear some reassuring words I suppose, which I'm sure you do too. I spoke with my consultant last week and he said it's now time for us to be referred to a fertlity specialist (so far have just been dealing with a gynae consultant) so I guess the whole journey is just beginning. I'm taking hope from some of the stories I read on here and other sites and also with people like annette (hun, hope the little one has finally made an appearance!!) also my cousin has just turned 41 and is due any day after 7/8 rounds of IVF, no tubes after 2 ectopics!!

I'll let you know how it goes next week after the procedure and you keep in touch too.

    Take care

  • Hi em j. Sorry to be so late with my reply. Work has been so busy!

How did your Lap go? What was it like? Did they tell you at the appointment what they saw?

Mine is Friday and am expecting them to tell me that my tube is def blocked but not sure what else they can check for?

Hope you are well and look forward to hearing from you. xx
  • Hi smiles,

You're prpbably still in hospital or recovering at home but when you read this I hope you're ok and not too sore.

I had my lap and dye over 2weeks ago and despite having to stay in hospital overnight and being understandably sore for a week or two I'm back at work and operating as normal.

I'm trying to take good news from what they found, which was that the left tube is perfectly fine and the right tube is still open. However there is an obstruction which cannot be unblocked and the con said that puts me at a higher risk of an ectopic should the egg become fertilized in the right tube as opposed to the left. My ovaries and womb etc all ok and the con said theres still a good chance I can become pregnant naturally.

My other problem is that my day 2-5 blood results were not great. I don't have the exact numbers but they were described as slightly raised. My con doesn't seem to think it a huge problem as I defo o/v and am bang on a 28 day cycle. However I have been in again today (cd 3) to have the tests repeated and am hoping and praying that the levels have come down. I'm a day later having the tests done than I was last mth so am hoping that the extra day has meant there may be changes in my hormones. If the results are the same I don't think I can cope anymore, it just seems to be constant bad news.

Let me know how you are and I'm hoping that you get some really positive news. xxx
  • Hi em j
thanks for your update. Well it's encouraging that they think you still have a good chance naturally. How did your second set of blood tests cone back?

Well I had my lap and dye and also a hysteroscopy done on 18th and all went well. I was expecting them to confirm that I had a blocked tube and that would be it but when I came round, the con said that both my tubes were fine and that all else looks good! REALLY strange as my hsg gad shown a blocked tube and the dye wouldn't go even part way down the tube and she tried twice with no luck. My friend suggested it might be because I've been having acupuncture but no idea whether I can put it down to that or not. I was really pleased but still quite groggy as I wouldve liked to ask what could be the differnce in the results.

I had a bit of a complication with the lap as I got home and struggled to pee so had to go back in and stay in overnight. They had to put a catheter in and said that sometimes the anasthetic makes your muscles lazy so had an unexpected stay but all good now (thank god!)

Also got a possible bit of good news in that the con also said that the criteria have changed for nhs funding in my area and that I may qualify fir a free cycle once I turn 30 in December. It's not a guarantee as I'm not sure of the details of criteria we have to meet but would be great if we could get that! Even better if it happened naturally before then but think I'm getting a bit too optimistic saying that!

Let me know how you are and what happened with your blood results.

    Xxx
  • Hi hun,

That's fab news re your lap and dye, doesn't matter whether it's the acupuncture or not as long as all ok! Your tube may have gone into spasm during the hsg, that can often happen through stress, anyway good news regardless.

My bloods came back ok this time thanks. I was within the normal range so feel more positive now, at least my eggs are ok. The con has discharged me now and said he couldn't see any reason why I'm not conceiving. He asked whether I would like to be referred for IVF as that's the next step and I didn't feel I had much choice, but to say yes. He said usually it's 3 years before they will see you if under 35 so has said he will write to the clinic and see if he can get us an earlier appt.. At the moment I'm just waiting to see if they will see us, I expect a response in thenext couple of weeks. I'm so pleased that you may be eligible for funding and am so hoping that you won't even need it.

I'm on cd 2 and felt a little different this mth, sore breasts a lot earlier and af pains but no bloody af showed yesterday, bang on my expected 28 days. I'm trying to stay positive but I'm sure like you find it really hard. The con and my GP have told me to eliminate stress which is impossible in my job as a teacher and the last mth has been particularly bad (today especially) so I'm not really sure what I can do about that one.

I too am having acupuncture. Are you feeling any different with this?

Lovely to hear from you, let me know how you're doing and take care xxx
