Are IVF waiting lists really shorter than advertised?

It's possible that I might need to have IVF to concieve after having gynaelogical surgery for cervical cancer last year has left me with suspected cervical stenosis (stiffening of the cervix where sperm can't get in to the uterus). My GP has referred me onto a fertility specialist for investigations but I haven't been seen by anyone yet.

Just because I like to be well prepared, I gave my PCT a call and asked what the waiting list for IVF in my area is like. The nurse I spoke to said that the list is 12 months, although it's often shorter because people drop out for a variety of reasons, such as not losing enough weight for example.

Have others found that they have waited as long as stated by their PCT or have you found the wait longer or shorter than advertised? Also, do you have to wait until you're at the top of the list to have all the tests and things, or do they come first?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just very eager and excited, although 12 months seems like a long time i'm sure it'll go quickly image

xx

  • We were referred by our GP last June and we are due to start any day now (in fact when AF arrives). We are based in Essex. Where are you based?
  • Thanks for the responses. I come under Calderdale and Huddersfield PCT (in West Yorkshire). I gave them a call a couple of days to ask about the waiting times, which is when I got the 12 months or less quote. Bit confused now though as on their website they state that all couples will be seen within five weeks of referral. Does this just mean for an initial chat and tests and things?

They also say that patients will be given treatment options within 6 weeks of diagnosis. So I suppose you get tests first, some kind of diagnosis of what the problem is, and then you get put on the waiting list?

This is probably a really dim question, but are you on a list until funding for your treatment is made available, or is it literally a case of a first come first served list of couples that they go through?

Just realised that I've asked far too many questions here, sorry about that
