3rd dagree tear

Hi ladies I had my son 18days ago and i suffered a 3rd dagree tear. I had a forecepts delivery and needed to be stiched up in theatre. That took an hour to do so i think it must have been bad. I left hospital 2days after having my son with 2lots of antibiotics and alot of laxitive drink! I was to take this drink for up to 2weeks if i needed it. I stopped taking it last sat as that was 2weeks up but now i am finding it really hard to go for number 2. (tmi sorry image ) It takes me going to the toilet 3 or 4times in the space of half an hour to feel like i am empty and when i do need to go i just get a feeling like its coming there and then and if i dont get to a toliet right then i will go in my pants! (sorry again) This hasnt happened only because i havnt really been out much yet! I do still feel really uncomfortable when trying to go. Should i keep taking the laxitive drink or do i need to seek help? I was told i was suppose to be seen by a physio therapist due to the tear but as i left at lunchtime they didnt get round to see me. Should i be requesting to see someone? I know having a baby you lose all dignity and my god yes i did lol but i am really embarassed by this and just dont know who to turn to!

I know im still recovering but having been told to stop the laxitive after 2weeks i would have thought i would be ok now but im not. Any advice will help sooo much. Thanks ladies and sorry for all the TMI!

Yla + Tyler 18days! XX

  • I am under health visitor now and to be honest she isnt much good at helping with little one! I will think about going to GP and asking for help and to get refered again to physio. Should have been refered right away as i had the 3rd degree tear!

    Thanks for the reply! XX
  • I can totally sympathise with you. I had a 3rd degree tear in august 2007 and had problems going to toilet and more so with stress incontinence. I went to my gp as pelvic floor exercises were useless, she referred me to a physio who specialised in womens health and i had a course of electro therapy treatment with her which didnt help me, so i had a referrral to a consultant as i wanted corrective surgery but i never went. I have just had another baby 2 weeks ago and didn tear as badly just a few stitches this time so was lucky but am going to make myself a new appointment to see the consultant as i still have problems from my original tear. But i would definately see your gp, dont leave it as it will only get worse, the problems are probably a direct result of the tear rather than from stopping the laxatives x
  • Hi

Likewise i had a tear in august 2007 also 3rd degree due to forceps delivery.

I had to take laxatives on an off for nearly 3years after DD was born. I nvr had any correspondence about psyhio and when i went to visit my gp he gave some numbing cream for the pain i was getting when passing stools and then passed me over to the nurse so she could have a look because he felt he couldnt. To which i never went to the nurse because the courage it took to see the gp was enough to i carried on with laxatives instead. I manage to stop taking the laxatives but every so oftern i still suffer with pain.

I'm now pregnant again (39+1) and have been consultant lead through my pregnancy this time around they were in two minds as to whether i should labour naturally or have a c-sec. Basically i was told that I should have been refered to a physio who would have worked with me with any problems i was facing. I nvr even saw anyone let alone recieved a letter thats why they cudnt tell me how i should labour because they cudnt tell the extents of the damage and werent going to go looking either. ( I've got up until the 1st March to goin to labour otherwise there give me a csec so no indcution whoop)

All I can suggest too you is that carry on with the laxatives they help and to either contact your GP or find out from HV about being refered to psyhio/gyno if you dont hear anything. I think its suppose to be about 12weeks after that you hear about psyhio but dont leave yourself to suffer with it because the longer you leave it the longer you'll put it off. If it werent for the fact i got pregnant again i dont think i'd ever have bothered finding anymore out about it.
  • Hey ladies thanks for the replies! I went to my gp yesterday from what you have said he was crap! All he said was i would only have had physio as an in patient and now i am at home with baby i wouldnt be getting anything! He said just to keep ataking the laxitive drink for aslong as i need. OH was with me and he said will i have to take laxitive drink for a while as when i do stop it the problem comes back and my GP actually said its just a down side of having a baby! I am going to mention it to HV on tues when she is next out as GP was crap and i was left feeling like its my fault im like this now as i decided to have a baby!

Congrats on your new arrival EmmaLouLou85 I hope you are getting on well.

I hope this birth goes smother for you Zowen. I hope to see a BA for you soon! XX
  • what an utterly crap gp! Do you have a physio direct system in your area? where you can ring up and refer yourself or go to a physio walk in centre? You could always ry that route if you do, as we have that system in place here, although i do not know if they deal with womens health type problems or just the regular muscular type stuff but worth a try? Or could you possible ring the post natal ward where you were cared for and speak to them as they may be able to refer you directly themselves, and you should get a follow up appointment with gynae after 12 weeks because of your tear, it is usual protocol for 3rd/4th degrees, however i never got one as somehow i was missed, shit happens i guess, and my consulant couldnt apologise enough during this pregnancy that i was never seen. Hope you get something sorted x
  • EmmaLou i'm in exactly the same boat as you. Never saw or heard from anyone and then when i got the courage to see the GP i was totally knocked for six and only bothered to talk about it when i got around to this pregnancy.

I'd definately try every avenue tho ylacoutts dont suffer insilence and feel you should just deal with it. The NHS seem to fail enough women as it is with this. It actually vex's me that there GPs are getting away with it and just saying its the downside to child birth when blatently it shouldnt be.

  • hi ladies i dont have a child but i am loitering!! however i am a physio in outpatients and have been working with the womens health specialist. in our trust it is protocol that all ladies with 3rd and 4th degree tears get seen within 6-12 weeks delivery in a group basis and ono to one after that if needed. This service should be avaiable in all local areas!!! make sure u fight for this service u should all have access!!!!

  • Hello lovely,

i suffered a 4th degree tear in July and i was automatically referred (by the hospital) to see a specialist at 6 weeks . I also went to see the GP for a routine check up at 6 weeks and he also referred me to see a physiotherapist about controlling the need to go for a number 2 - coz like you at the time when I needed to go I had to go didn't matter where I was and it just came on all of a sudden (luckily never had an accident) . I think that the way your GP has treated you is appalling! Could you ask to see another GP for a second opinion? If I was you I would! Hope this gets sorted for you. I recommend pelvic floor exercises at least 4/5 times a day.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thank you so much for the replies ladies. There is only one GP as its a small local village surgary so not able to see anyone else. I am feeling slightly better the past few days so hoping that i am sorting myself out without help from anyone. If it does continue i will go back to GP or i will talk to my consultant when i have my review on 24th March. XX
  • Hi

I had a 3rd degree tear and manual placenta removal surgery after having DS in October 2010......

I had an appointment at the hospital 8 weeks after the birth and I had a full examination down below.....my stitches were checked and (TMI alert) the MW put a finger up each hole (I did warn you) and asked me to do a few pelvic floors....she was happy that both were healing well

give yourself time to heal down below.......keep taking the laxatives....fybrogel is good but it doesn't give you that much time to get to the loo.......
