Pethidine vs Meptid
Hi, I wonder if anyone can advise me... my NCT teacher said that Meptid was like Pethidine but without the horrible side effects (i.e. making baby v drowsy), but from what I've seen online people are saying that it is not as effective as Pethidine and does pass to the baby anyway. I know my hospital only provide Pethidine, but they've said that if my GP will prescribe Meptid then I can bring it in with me..... has anyone got any experience of Meptid or both, or heard anything else??
Any information would be much appreciated!

I had pethidine - 2 lots infact! and thought it worked well, and i didn't really think that it made my baby overly drowsy. Never heard of meptid i'm afraid

When I discussed it with my delivery mw she said that pethadine is the mw's choice of pain relief as it works so well as a muscle relaxant so can help the cervix dilate. My mw also seemed to think that the NCT are the only people whi are anti it and she also said she'd never seen it have a drowsy effect on a newborn.
The only reason I had was because I was told I wasn't in established labour (so no to gas and air) and I was desperate for pain releif as it turns out I must have been very close as my DD was born about two hours later.
The only advice I can give is keep an open mind until you get there.
Good luck.
When i was born my mum was given pethidine really late in her labour and as a result i had to be given drugs when i was born. I was drowsy and not breathing properly. However that was 22 years ago and i think they usually say no past a certain point in labour.

This was the worst choice i could have made for me! It was given to me too late so when my son came the meptid kicked in and made me drowsy and i was sick just after! It was horrible and i won't have anything like that again.
Obviously it's your choice but it just wasn't for me. Good luck hope all goes well xx
would avoid diamorphine though i was given this with my second and was only told later on that it only works on a small percentage of women, and i wasnt one of the lucky ones x
