what happens when referred?

Hi, we have been ttc for 2 years 4 months.  Been to see GP who sent me for an ultrasound scan as i reckon ive got PCOS (i definitely have insulin resistance as i got diagnosed diabetic last year, along with almost all the other side effects listed), but no cysts were seen.  I have always had irregular periods until i got put on metformin last year for the diabetes and have been every 28 days since. He then did a 21 day blood test which says its come back nomal.

Now, ive got a letter telling me ive been put on a waiting list for gynaecology and they will contact me again when ive moved up the list to several weeks waiting time.

i was a bit suprised, as GP said to me he would refer both husband and me to fertility, as no tests have been done on husband at all, but this letter only says for me.

I just wondered if anyone has experience on what happens at the gynae clinic? and whether husband will get checked after or what? Also, im rather over weight and im worried they are just going to tell me to lose weight, which i have been trying and trying but it is pretty hard with insulin resistance to lose it though i have managed 2 stone in the last year.  I find it hard as i see other large ladies and they have children.

Any info would be great, as i am really at the point where i just want to know if i am or am not likely to be able to conceive, as i also have to worry about diabetic complications in pregnancy as well which is sounding really hard too. and if its not going to happen for me, then i would just like to get on with the rest of my life now as i keep putting things on hold in case we get pregnant.

  • Hi feejeel, how's you? Sorry to hear you're having a hard time, I know exactly how you must be feeling. I'll fill you in on my TTC journey so far.....

I have been trying for 19 months, went to see my GP November 2012, he asked a few questions then said that we needed some standard routine fertility tests. I had day 21 progesterone bloods done a week or so later which I was told were ok. Then a few weeks later my husband had a semen analysis done, which he had to take into hospital to be tested, a week or so later he found out that he was all ok. So then we made an appt to go back to our GP, to discuss what was next and he said he would refer us to the hospital ( the referral was in my name as my husbands test was normal, but they do put your partners name alongside it) this was December time that he did this. Then we got a letter through the post from the hospital asking us to phone up for an appt slot, as our hospital has a choose and book service but the next available one that we could attend was jan 24th this year. So off we went when the date arrived, we had a few observations, weight done etc, then took our full fertility history. My consultant is really lovely and kind, very easy to talk to which is good. He then told me that my progesterone level was 20 but it needed to be above 30 to confirm I'd ovulated so due to my periods being irregular he thinks I'm not ovulating at all or not much..

So then I had to go for a HSG test which is an X-ray similar to a smear test, they insert dye to check if the Fallopian tubes are blocked, they push dye in then take xray pictures. Luckily for me this test was also clear, and the radiologist showed me the pics which was interesting to see. Then the next stage which my consultant had discussed with us, was to commence clomid which is a drug that induces ovulation. He sent me a blood form and a prescription. My AF arrived today, which is sad but after so long I just expect my period every month as there is obviously a problem. So I'm due to commence this medication tomorrow then have more bloods done later in my cycle to see if it made me ovulate. I'm excited to be trying something new but also scared in case it doesn't work.

Hope my story has helped you understand what might happen at the clinic when you get an appt. let me know if you have any more questions hun. Xxx
  • Hi feejel, my gynaecologist referred me to the fertility specialist after being diagnosed with severe endometriosis. I've had surgery for this recently so thy checked my 1 remaining tube is not blocked with the dye test Saz has mentioned while I was under anaesthetic. Then I had blood tests on the second day of my period to check for follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) & thyroid function. I'm now on thyroxine as had under active thyroid, & I feel better! Like Saz says they also take note of your history, periods, sexual health, up to date smear etc. once I had all this done & was ok, my husband had his semen analysis which was also fine. Then next period I started 50mg clomid, had cycle day 21 blood test but I hadn't ovulated as my progesterone levels were very low. Clomid then increased to 100mg. I had a scan at day 10 to check I was about to ovulate (which I was - yay!!). Had more bloods on Monday to check progesterone. Everyone at my hospital who I have dealt with in gynaecology & fertility clinic has been so lovely. I can call my consultant & she always calls back. I usually get quite emotional about it all & she is so patient & explains everything so clearly. She really has given me hope I will have a little one. I know exactly what you mean about having your life on hold. Ttc just takes over your life doesn't it? Well, best of luck & let me know if you have any more questions xxxx
  • Hi Saz

I have been TTC for 8 months. But since i came off the pill i had no period at all. So i went to my GP. He sent me for a internal scan at the Hospital. Came back that i have PCOS. So went back to GP, who refered me to fertility at Hospital. My husband is booked for a sperm test (does this happen at the doctors? or the hospital?) and i had to do a swab to cancel out other probs i guess.

So my appointment at the fertility is jan 20th 2014...what should i expect on this appoint? i really just want to get on chlomid??! how much longer will i hav to wait to be prescribed?!?!?!?!

Any advice/experiences are fab to me xxx
