SA results

FINALLY got back today!!!! apparently DH has a good amount of no less than 3 mil which is good (from what the gp said and from what i read on here!) 60% are swimmers which is also good, however, 92% are abnormal... image DH asked what causes this and has been told smoking and drinking mainly, in DH's case it'll be the smoking as he doesn't drink that much reall and even the GP agreed with this. The doc didn't say anything about repeating the test and said that the results aren't bad enough for the problem to be just with DH... can anyone help with this and the fact that i am now stressing this won't ever happen for us!?!? xxx

hi rocky, are you saying that the sperm count is 3 million per ml? if so, this is on the low side as they like to see a minimum of 15-20 million. it is normal to have 80-90%abnormal sperm so your dh is not too bad there. i found this document helpful for sperm results...
    http://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/index.jsp?action=download&o=29263

will you be getting the opportunity to discuss the results with a specialist? gp's are not always the greatest as they aren't always familiar with it all....

have you had blood tests and tubes tested?

from what i know, the results aren't great but not terrible either....lots of ladies on here have conceived with much worse. will your dh consider giving up smoking as that may make a big difference (my dh smokes/d too so i know how hard that one is!!).

hth and GOOD LUCK...IT WILL HAPPEN xx

from what DH has said there was 3 ml of fluid... but now i'm confused!!! I'll try to ask him again later and poss get the GP to repeat it again as i want him to phone up and see if he needs this repeating again.

I've got a gynae referral next Fri but not sure what will happen from here as we havent been referred as a couple for infertility but i know some people on here have had an app with a gynae first...

i doubt it! I've been reading that caffeine in chocolate and fizzy drinks etc is also bad, i switched the tea and coffee to decaff ages ago! though will most likely still ahve some when out and about... Thanks for replying! xxxx

Hey Rocky, so glad you finally got your results back. I don't really know too much about it but do agree that GP's aren't always the best people to interpret the results as they don't do it every day.

I'd take them in to the consultant and go armed with questions that i'm sure can be answered x x

it's also just occured to me that the abnormal sperm could have well been the reason our baby stopped developing at about 8 weeks last year.... Now i'm major worried. xx

Hey .... That makes sense, they say 2ml-6ml size sample is normal so 3ml is totally fine image x

I seriously doubt in Rocky. I think was abnormality means is that those ones wouldn't be able to fertilise the egg, I know it's really hard but try and wait until you go to the specialist and step away from google!

Sadly there are so many ladies who have mc and mmc and not linked to abnormal sperm or anything like that.

I was convinced my ectopic was due to dodgy tubes and now know it wasn't and as awful and frustrating as it is we will just never know why it happened to us.

    Hugs my lovely x x

hey MP, do you know if you can get a print out of them from the GP? would my gynae be able to help with this? i'm SO confused as I have a gynae app but WE haven't had an app for infertility or TTC problems so haven't had any 'together' apps if that makes sense... not sure what to do! i may have to ask a friend who went to the same hosp! just SO worried we're guna have to wait anouther 3 months to get an app if needed!!!! (For that i WOULD pay!!!!) xx

"Abnormal" refers to the shape of the sperm, i.e the head isn't tear drop shaped and/or the tail isnt the right length etc
Def wouldn't mean it's responsible for a mc so try not to worry too much over it xx

We asked hubby's GP for a print out then compared them to World Health Organisation parameters online so we knew where we stood image xx

You are entitled to all copies of your medical records, you'll be asked for written consent.

I'm currently reading the nice guidelines tiny baby dancer put a link to, would really recommend reading, very useful and it's helping me with my list of questions for my appointment x x

Rocky you need to find out what the count is per ml as even if you have 60% swimmers, if that was of a low count, it could be a problem if you see what i mean. Dont worry too much abput the morphology (the abnormal), apparently most men now have a really high percentage of this. Its the count and the motility which is important. Hope it is all ok. I would get a copy for your gynae appoint as our didnt have one when we got there and luckily we had one with us! xx

Hi rocky, just wanted to add - dont worry that you just have a gynae appointment. This will be for both of you, they will take both histories and go over SA result with you. Its totally normal to go to gynae clinic first, they do all tests, then if neccessary will refer you to fertility clinic.

    Good luck xx

rocky, my app was just sent to me by gynae but asked me to take dh along and they looked at both our results. just ask them to look at the sperm results and they should explain them to you.

i agree morphology is always a high no of abnormal....only a problem if you have virtuaslly no normal ones. and abnormal ones are unable to fertilise eggs.

yes i asked for printouts, these were also useful later on when we went for ivf as we had the results already.

    xx

Hi Rocky, I'm in a similar situation. The Dr's didn't really explain DH SA results very well, and even admitted he wasn't a fertility specialist and so wasn't able to explain them properly, but in his opinion he said there was no reason why we couldn't conceive naturally (DH has 65m sperm but with only 16% motility). I then rather stupidly went on Google and convinced myself the results were dreadful, but then gave myself a telling off because I'm not a medical expert either. Being obssesive, I went back to a different Dr for another opinion, and he said 'it only takes one sperm to get pregnant!'. I also discussed things with him which could affect DH sperm and the worst one for him is that he is a chef - the Dr said to me that basically he is boiling his balls!! Thanks for that! My Hubbie also drinks alot of caffine and does like to drink alcohol. Fortunately he gave up smoking a year ago. Anyway, I have my Gynae appointment through for the 23rd Sept and have decided to let them explain the results to me. And, although it is only my name on the referral letter, I will be taking DH along with me. My opinion is that we are in this together and so he should be there too. Good luck for your appoinment, and if possible try not to worry too much about the results until they have been explained to you properly.

Thanks all for your replies, it's def helped! I'm going to ask DH to phone after the weekend to ask for a print out and if the test should be repeated and i'll make sure he comes in to at my app next week too. In the meantime i've enquired about going private for a joint fertility consultation so should hear back today or monday about that. can't wait for next week now as i'll know at least one way or the other whether it's right or not and i guess as i've had the odd problem with spotting an no ov and pains maybe the gynae can at least look inot that for me!!!

I'm pretty certain the 3 mil was the amount so 3ml but if DH gets a printout i can look - and then come on here and ask you lot to help me understand! ha ha, God this is more stressful than i thought! it was almost better not knowing... but that's not going to help us. DH has said he will cut down caffeine and alcohol and smoking but we're going to have a proper chat about it this weekend as i was far too upset yesterday to get my head around it! my main fear is that it's very unlikely we'd get proper help if needed without paying as DH technically has a child.... i say technically as he isn't part of our lives, was b4 we were together and it was a one off thing with the mum that went wrong if you get what i mean! Seems so unfair though. xxx
