Echogenic bowel at 20w scan :(

Hello ladies, well after much excitement had my 20 week scan today. All good apart from one thing ... baby has an echogenic bowel, which apparently could be nothing (particularly as there are no other markers) but could be a sign of cystic fibrosis or Downs Syndrome. We have been given odds of 1-2% of this. Hubby and I have been tested for cf today but for downs we refused the amnio due to the risk of miscarriage. I know everything could be fine but I can't stop crying image

  • Oh no, I'm really sorry hun, what a worry for you

From what you say it is much more likely to be nothing to worry about, bu I have my fingers very firmly crossed for you. I'm sure all we be fine

If all is well, what is a echogenic bowel? Will your baby need some medication or something for it?

    xx
  • oh hunny I hope it is nothing but what a worry not knowing until the birth.

you know we're here for you xx
  • Thank you. It is basically a 'brightness' of the bowel on a scan, meaning it looks as dense as bone. It is what is known as a soft marker for downs or cf. However it could just be caused by the baby swallowing amniotic fluid which contains blood, which is not dangerous at all.

Have heard from a specialist that I really shouldn't worry as in his career he has never seen a baby being born with abnormalities with only this one soft marker. Am feeling far more positive this evening ... after all there's a 98-99% chance that my boy is perfect so am focusing on this. All my reseach has been super positive too, despite the dangers of googling!

Have had blood tests to rule out cf and other infections which can stunt the baby's growth. However things looking good on that front - been told to expect a big baba, estimated weight was almost 2 weeks ahead of the average, he weighs about 1 lb already! This will be monitored at a scan at 28 weeks, so keep everything crossed for me x
  • Oh bless you hun, you must be so worried but it does all sounds positive so try and keep focused on that image

Sounds like you have a big strong boy growing well!!

Take care, and step away from google!!!

  • See, the wonders of google!

My cousin was scared witless when having her first child Lucy 8 years ago, with kidney issues, again, the bowel marker and a slight pocket of fluid on the brain. They were advised to terminate at the 20 week scan, but refused amnio and came to the conclusion what will be will be.

Lucy, is a strapping 8 year old, my favourite girl (almost after Isabelle of course!) who didn't die within hours of birth, has no major defects apart from a funky shaped kidney, and the other one doesn't function great, but it still works. She was on anit-biotics to prevent further infection and damage in the first 2 years of her life, and apart from causing insomnia (mainly a problem for my cousin) and many a rash she was fine!

I know it is easier said than done, but really, one soft marker is nothing to worry about, I'm sure you could root a photo out of her on facebook, she was my flowergirl, and she is fantastic!

Glad that you have turned it around to 98-99%, I am sure your little man will be perfect, and if not, it's not the end of the world, he is just that little bit more special, but will bring just as much joy and fun as the lovely Roisin.

Much much love to you and Stephen, keep smiling, and thinking of that gorgeous thumb sucking photo!
