Fin's visit to health visitor

saw hv today for fin's 7-9month development check up!

started ok as he can sit and then she gave him a raisen to pick up and eat... he wouldnt take it off her so i had it and he took it put it near mouth then threw it...

then she said about his feet pointing inwards - which id already said to her about ages ago and been to see doc... she was concerned about it as quite obviously bowed legs and inwards pointing feet...(i felt sooo anygry someone saying that about my little boy - even though its right)

then she asked about sleeping - i said that he's much better although does wake in night for dummy etc...

then the eating came up -well basically said that he should be eating proper meals now and certainly not purrees as smooth as im giving - i said i have tried everything jars making my own offering normal food fingure food etc... what else can i do apart from try every day!

she said give no more than 3 bottles and just give what were eating.... what a lot of help that is!

then she weighted him and measured him... in 5 weeks he's only put on half an oz.... not good and the height isnt going up as it should - legs shorter than body (concerned due to bowed legs etc and growing properly....) then she said that she has noticed that the creases on his legs by his theighs are not in line which they should be and this is a concern due to something with the hip joint... ive been made to visit doctor this week - so as you can imagine im all upset!

she said as he's not putting on weight it is a serious problem and i must persist with eating - that annoyed me as i try every single day!!!

anyway seeing doctor on wednesday!

also been and brought some veg and fruit to keep up fingure foods, also some jars to try and get more in him and they are thicker than the ella pouches he eats... today with my mum holding him he actually ate a jar which was chicken, rice, squash and fruit.... first ever!!!

  • oh im sorry sounds like you had a pretty traumatic experience. and to top it off sounds like hv doesn't know the meaning of the word 'tact'

Glad he ate some food today that sounds fantastic, zachariah can still be a bit fussy and spreading the mush on toast really does seem to be working for us, he just gets to hold it, suck mush off, and throw toast on the floor! lol! and we are still on mush i havent even attempted to give him our consistancy food so guess i'll get a telling off come my turn!

the bowed legs must have been driving you mad as youd already told her about them, thats like me with zachariah's sight, i mentioned it at 6 weeks and it took me going to the dr before i was listened to. they always assume we're neurotic mums grr! Do you know what they can do to help it or are you just waiting now until dr can put things down for you in a nicer way?

i'm so sorry star you must be feeling like right crap today, at least fin was a good boy and ate his dinner, i think our los know when it really matters to be good for us, bless them. really hope youre doing ok and that wednesday goes well for you, sending you hugs and keeping my fingers crossed for fin
  • Can't believe after all the help uv been asking for with his eating they've only just decided it's a problem.
and wasn't it only couple weeks ago u went to docs with his legs/feet? Why didn't they do somat then?

Well done fin though eating all his jar - bet u didn't imagine him doin that so soon a couple weeks ago x
  • Your hv sounds like a right bag! Good Luck at the docs.....again! Hope they listen to you this time.
Can't believe she said to just give what you eat and offer no other advice. Bet you're glad he ate a jar though! Keep it up Fin!
Try not to worry too much, easier said than done i know, but they'll sort whatever's up with his legs. And he'll put weight on if he eats more jars and other foods.
    Chin up!
  • next time he's weighed and has put it all on tell hv you served him chips and pizza and look all pleased with yourself lol!
  • Oh Hun, I'm so sorry things are all crappy at the mo and your HV is an old bag. Wish I could share mine with you, she's lovely.
I still haven't got my Lo to take anything but puree and Ready Brek. The slightest texture and she heaves and gags all over the place and then does a rendidtion of The Witches of Eastwick.
The way I see it is, at least you and I are still giving them something. If we do what your HV suggests, they'll be on less calories so, how's that gonna make em put any weight on? I know we have to persevere but, why does everything have to be timed around one graph?! All our Lo's are different so, surely they will all hit targets at different times.
Good luck at the Doc's. I hope it turns out to be something simple to put right XXX
  • What a cow your hv sounds!!!

Definately worth checking out on the legs though.. I was concerned about Cole's legs and the doc said something about leg creases being even meant they were ok. I have spoken to a couple of docs about bowed legs and they said that it was normal for babies though and they grow out of them. Hopefully the docs can sort out Fin's feet and legs though - Cole's feet pointed upwards when he was born and physio sorted them out reasonably quickly. So bloody annoying when they don't listen or pay attention though!! We noticed his feet as soon as he was born but the midwifes told us he was fine, and it was only cause we brought it to the attention of the paediatrician that we got them sorted!

As for proper meals...arseholes to that! I don't know that any of the dec babies are eating proper meals yet (although I bet someone will prove me wrong! lol!) Cole is back on all the smooth stuff and bits of finger food after being ill and at th emoment I'm just happy that he's eating without puking and screaming! Arseholes to eating proper meals..I'll take eating anything at the moment! Just dropping bottles to force him to eat sounds cruel!! Well done Fin though on eating the whole jar!

Good luck at the docs and hope you are feeling better soon
  • Don't see the point in hv's all mine ever says is his weights spot on well done as if it's some sort of achievement. I've never been asked how he goes on eating or even if he's on solids. And if I ask anything health related she tells me to pop into the pharmacy or the walk in centre. Even when I asked what I could do to ease his cold at 4 weeks.

In bit of a grumpy mood tonight can u tell lol.
  • Huge hugs hun!! Sounds like you deffo need then!
Your HV sounds like a silly witch, why does noone ever listen to us mum's? Myabe we havent spent however many years at college or uni but we KNOW when something isn't right. I hope you get a lovely doc and fingers crossed there is nothing to worry about. As far a weaning goes good boy Fin tonight for eating a jar!! Hv deffo wasnt helpful there and he will get there in his own time, you dont see adults only eating purees do you? Its just every baby is different and the main thing is he has still put weight on and not lost any! xxx
  • thank you everyone you have all made me feel loads better - apart from today i am actually feeling sooooo happy at the mo and cant get enough of fin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he's such a happy boy i shouldnt moan about all the little things cause even though he may have bowed legs he's still adorable and healthy....

    thank you again!!

  • Glad you are feeling happier today, I agree with the others your hv sounds like a witch!

Bren can be quite fussy with his food, sometimes eats puree happily othertimes won't have it at all. I have found giving him a chunk of pineapple to munch on himself, or banana, or pretty much anything he can hold himself like bread (french bread is good when their teeth are coming through). He is loads happier when he is feeding himself. No way is he ready to eat food like we have though - not unless it has been in the blender lol!

I would have turned round to her and said 'well your my hv aren't you supposed to be the one advising me? As I didn't know any of this until today you are obviously doing a pretty pants job!!'.

I'd stick to comparing with the rest of the Dec bubs though, think between us we have far more sense!!

Hope the Doc sorts out Fins legs ok, I would have thought if it was a major prob it would have been picked up at your last appointment with themso try not to panic.

    Big hugs xxx
  • Glad you are feeling better.

Is it just me...or is giving a raisen (is that how you spell it? it looks odd) to a 7 month old kid stupid and a choking hazard?!! I wouldn't give Cole a raisen in case he choked.
  • well i wont be doing it at home i can tell you....... how stupid!!! glad you said that!

    xx
  • Oh bless you, they sometimes don't know how to be discreat do they hv's!!!. We had a problem with my first boy as his dad has rickets and we had to go to a genes specialist. We were told that the rickets gene is in the female side but my oh, if he had a girl, would definately carry some characteristics of rickets. We were so sad about this and put alot of pressure on my oh as we wanted to have another baby but he didn't want to have one as he didn't want his little girl going through what he had(which I totally understood). However we grew apart and he said he wanted to break up with me as he loved me too much and knew I wanted more children. Selfish as this will sound but I was glad....We hadn't been getting on as he had depression issues and I just wanted to be as normal as we could. Anyway I have since had another baby with my new partner and my ex is living the life of riley as he can't be responsible enough to look after my eldest!!!Fate that we split up though.

After that big sob story, My nephew had bowed legs and they were quite severe, however they are now ok. Your baby is perfect to you and all you want is the best so just raise your concern and get answers!!!! xx
  • Did I read in baby forum that u were at docs with Fin today about his legs/feet? if so hope it went ok xxx
  • hi becci, yep went to docs after seeing hv!

he was very nice and i said what hv had said he looked a bit annoyed with waht shed said and he thinks that fin will be ok as joints etc seem fine but he said that as she has now raised concerns and worried me he'll refer to peadatrian to get second opition!!!!!!!!!!!

so its good he thinks its not a big issue - and in a way im glad seeing a pead as they are qualified to work with babies and should def know there stuff!!!!!!!

got to wait for appointment now - but i already feel better!!!

    xx
  • Oh that sounds possitive then and at leats by seeing paed ul have more peace of mind anyway with the specialised opinion x
  • Awwwww Charlotte thats fantastic news, bet like you already feel that a weight has been lifted from your shoulders. Its good that GP was annoyed at HV maybe he will do something about it! Keep us posted on pead appointment xxx
  • You'll get proper answers from the paed and hopefully they'll put your mind at rest and sort anything out quickly.
Hope your doc tells hv off lol.
  • Glad your doc has reassured you and good that you will be referred to the experts image

Hope he kicks the dumb hv up the arse!!
