20 week scan

I had my scan on friday. Baby is healthy image

Has anyone else encountered a policy change for their scan? We went in expecting to watch the scan like we did with our others. This time they told us we were not allowed to watch but they would print out pictures for us for ??10. We were also given a bag full of leaflets for scan places we could pay to go and watch. So I laid there and felt rather bad for dh who had taken the afternoon off work to attend. Dh asked a few questions like is the baby the right size, and is the heart okay, only to be told shhhhh! I'm taking measurements. He joked so no chance of asking about gender then? The lady glared at him, and told him there was information about that in the bag. We were given two very poor pictures, as there is a big white blob in front of baby, and told baby is fine, bye.

I felt a little disappointed as I felt it was quite a bonding experience with my others to be able to see wow there is a baby in there. I know it's not necessary, but I kind of feel it has become a bit of a money making scheme. I don't know if it is worth it or not. The hospital offers a scan for parents to watch for ??60, believe it or not it's an extra ??15 if I wanted to find out gender  I'm really glad it's not my first though, I would have been quite upset.

I hope everyone else's scans go well.

  • That sounds awful - poor you. We got to watch our scan on a small TV screen (I'm in Norh London). I can't believe they want to charge you ??60 to watch the scan, it's not like it coststhem anything extra to let you see. x
  • What??? That is crazy and I've not heard anything like it before, how incredibly rude to tell you to shhh when asking questions about your own baby. Sounds like some messed up money making scheme to get money out of pregnant women who of course want to see their baby on the screen. It's not as if it would put them out to angle the screen so you can see it. Where do you live?

On a positive note, really pleased to hear all is well with baby.

  • G/C from DIS but this seems most odd. Yes the 20wks scan is the anomally/detailled scan where they make important measurements but they can still find the time imbetween to show you and your partner the screen, it should be an enjoyable/relaxed experience. I've heard of charging for gender scans but never for a 12 or 20 wk scan, for most of us it's the only chance we get to see baby before the birth.
  • Hedgie I feel really upset for you and hubby. I'm not sure I would have lain still and let them see my baby if I couldn't!

I have mine tomorrow, I'm part of a trial and they seem to want to make everything a nice experience so you will stick with the trial as they want to assess if they need to change dates for scans introduce new measurements etc to get the best outcomes for Mum and baby.

I am so cross for you, but glad that little one is healthy.

    Mooomin x
  • Hedgie, that's terrible can you complain? that surely can't be policy the sonographer sounds like a witch!!

    xx
  • Hey there.

This sounds like you had an awful time. To think I was shocked at having to pay ??4 for each pic printed at least both my scans the sonographer was great an explained everything.

You could consider having a private scan at a specialist center a sexing scan about ??80 (sounds expensive but worth it) you will be treated really nicely as they there for you. Also seeing baby in 3D is totally amazing.
