bedtime getting later

I dont know whats going on, last night I just couldn't get Tyler to sleep he was not having any of it. And I was due to go out, so off I went leaving hubs in charge. He said Tyler played in his cot for 2 hours before crying, so he went up and he went straight to sleep.
Today, having the same problem, would not go to sleep, so just left him play in his cot. He cried at 8.50 so I went up, and he went straight to sleep again.
Whats going on >?? I thought last night was a one off...
