My daughter won't use the toilet

Hi my name is dawn i have a four year old daughter she won't use the toilet when she needs to poo. when we have her on the toilet she tells us that she doesn't need to go. As soon as she gets down stairs her pants are full of poo. I have been told by a few friends that maybe something has happened when she was younger  and that she might be afraid to go to the toilet. can anyone give me some advice please?

    I have the same with my 3 year old, although its with wee too. She more than ready and has been for about 3 months. I cannot get her anywhere near the toilet, how did you sort this?
