Potty Training - Day 1 did not go well!!

Hello

My oldest lo is nearly 28 months so we decided it was time to potty train him as he always tells us he's done a wee or a poo and asks me or hubby to change him.

Today was day one and it did not go well!!

We started him off just before lunchtime as we were waiting for some Kandoo foam soap and wipes to arrive with my Tesco shopping delivery. I told him that he'd now got big boy's soap and wipes for after he'd used his potty.

It started well, we left his bottom half bare and he couldn't wait to be able to use the Kandoo stuff and sat on his potty but didn't do anything as hubby had only just changed a pooey nappy. We sat him in his highchair for dinner and all of a sudden I heard him weeing all over the kitchen floor, I stayed calm and cleaned it up and hubby cleaned him up.

A bit later we sat him back on his potty and read stories to him to get him to stay there for a bit but again he didn't need to do anything, 10 minutes later it was all over the living room floor, which luckily has wooden flooring!! Had to clean it all up again!!

We haven't had a single wee or poo in the potty today so hopefully tomorrow will be better!!

Anyone got any tips or advice about what they did or are currently doing?

  • Maybe a small treat or star chart for every successful pee or poo in d pot? Might help hun
  • gone a bit better over the past few days, had a few of both in the potty since my post on monday.

thanks for the tip bex, we have started using his reward chart for potty training, he's been using it for brushing his teeth and got into the habit of letting us brush his teeth quite quickly so hopefully he'll pick this up quickly too.
  • Kelly,

Glad to hear the past few days have been going better. Unfortunately it just takes time & patience (& gallons of dettol!!!!!)

We had Amy going well again but as you know she has this fear of poo since she was sick. So when she was running around all day she was doing her pees great but holding on with the poos. Then in the morning she would waken & there would be a big poo in her nappy. This went on for 2 or 3 days & she has really sensitive skin & now has the worst nappy rash I have seen so unfortunately back to square one for a while for us again til this heals up

sorry to hear about amy's nappy rash, casper's been like that over the weekend too, when we've gone out and had to put a nappy on we've been using the feel n learn training pants, because they don't lock the wee away he's sore once he's done 1 wee, i got 2 packs on buy 1 get 1 free for 5.00, don't think i'll use them again as they're not worth the money even with the free ones too.

we're on day 8 today (i sound like big brother!!) and he's done really well, yesterday we had 1 poo and 6 wees in the potty, he was just getting up from playing and going over to it when he needed to, i was really proud he'd understood his body telling him he needed to go and then knowing to go to the potty, we didn't have enough room on his reward chart for 7 stickers so given him 6 and an extra one for today, don't know if that constitutes cheating the system or not!!??

when you were training amy before and she was having her daytime naps did you put a nappy back on her for these? that's what i've been doing wuth casper, he doesn't really have naps now so didn't want to confuse him when he did have one but seems the best thing to do.

  • Hi Kelly,

Well done to Casper. That doesnt sound like cheating to me!!!!

I always put Amys nappy back on for her daytime nap. She only has 1 nap but it lasts from 3.30 - 6 & I dont think I could have expected her to hold on til then.

I had to get a prescription for nappy cream from the Dr as the over the counter ones werent working for her. We have been letting her run round with no nappy on this past few\days, more to help her nappy rash than her potty training but it seems to be helping both & shes been sneaking off & using her potty without even saying. Shes a wee rascal though coz if I asked her to try for a pee pee she would refuse point blank to sit on the potty. I'm thinking of telling her to pee on the floor to see if she'll then go to the potty!!!

Today has gone really well though & we have had no accidents & she was dry when she came back from the shops too but was telling me that she needed a poo & for the 1st time in ages she went to the potty of her own accord & managed a poo in it though it still scares & upsets her doing it but at least its a start.

Amy got a blackboard & some coloured chalk at xmas & I started doing a potty reward chart on it & everytime she manages to do something in the potty we draw a smiley face on it & let her pick the colour but if she has an accident we have to rub 1 out. Seems to be working quite well for her

Are they the pampers training pants you used? I've used the huggies ones & thought they were ok but expensive was thinking about reusable ones but not sure

    Good luck

another question for you . . when you took amy to the shops and she came back dry did you take her out in a nappy or was she just in underwear? i'm not sure how soon i should take casper out in his new undies, he's dying to wear them but i haven't let him since the superman episode, i want him to be clear that they're to replace the nappy not to wear as well as. i don't know if it's too soon, he's only just got the hang of the potty, i might be asking for trouble and accidents if i rush it.

we are using the pampers ones yeah, i don't like them, that's why i'm keen to know when to make the complete switch as i don't want constant nappy rash or to switch brands for such a short time and find i don't like those and have to get more!!

hope i remember all this for potty training alex, it's hard work!!

  • Hi Kelly,

If we were going to somewhere where Amy would be running about or out of her buggy, say in a restaurant, I would have taken her out in training pants but made it clear that she wasnt to do pee pees in them but if we were just nipping out or going out for a walk I would just let her wear pants, though I have wetec pads on her carseat & buggy incase she had an accident. She was really only getting to the reliable stage when she took sick & that really knocked her back so we are not just back to that stage yet but I think I would want her to be pretty reliable before using just pants when out. I dont know if that is the right thing to do or not though or if I should just say right no more nappies from now on & deal with the accidents.

The good news is that shes getting her confidence back using her potty. I've just been letting her run round with a wee skirt on & nothing underneath to let her nappyrash heal & had left the potty out but hadnt been pushing her to use it & the wee rascal is just going & using it when she needs to & then telling us to come & see. I shouldnt complain coz at least shes using it but if I asked her to try to go before we went out somewhere she would refuse point blank so although shes using it its on her terms only. Hopefully this will get better over the next couple of weeks though.

I know what you mean about trying to remember everything coz Mark said to me last week is this potty training lark meant to be soo b****y difficult????

Good luck with Casper aka Superman.

Keep me poted on how youre getting on coz its great to know someone else is going through all this at the moment too

    another progress report for you!

yesterday was a bit hit and miss, not bad but not great either.

i got casper up in the morning and took his nappy straight off and didn't put another one on until bedtime as we were in all day as i had my sister's little girl too.

he started off well going on the potty, then because my niece was due round i put some undies on him and explained what he needed to do, pulling them down to on the potty etc, we had 2 accidents in 2 pairs so i decided to leave it for a while and he was just going round bottom half bare again and then no accidents, don't know what my heating bill will be like, i whacked it up so he didn't get cold!!

he seems to have got the hang of it without the undies, like amy he just goes and sits on it when he needs to, even doing his poos in there now, he's got no choice really since he didn't have a nappy on!!

he was tired in the afternoon but i'd left it too late to put him down for a nap so he got mischievious and purposely kicked the potty over after he'd finished, luckily it was just a wee i needed to clear up but i was not amused!!

i've just dropped him off with his childminder and she's going to carry on with the training today so it will be interesting to see how he gets on there, he might be too distracted playing with the other kids to remember to go to the potty, i've sent him with 10 pairs of undies and a few clothing changes, he can't run around bare there which is understandable, it's more like a nursery as her and her daughter do the childminding in their big house so there's usually 4 or 5 younger ones running about and i'm sure they don't want to see casper in all his glory!!

will let you know how he was there when i find out.

  • The wee monkey. Its wonderful just how mischeivious they can be when theyre tired!!!

He is doing really well though for all the time youve been at it.

Yesterday was good for us, no accidents, though she was just running round in her skirt with nothing underneath. So far today she has had 1 accident but it has been the 1st for a few days so I suppose its only to be expected & sometimes I think the odd accident does them no harm every now & again coz they do tend to get lazy & leave it too late sometimes.

Looking forward to hearing how Casper manages at his childminders. That will be a big step for him

    Good luck

got casper from his childminder's yesterday afternoon and he was in a training pant nappy, he had not had a good day there as far as potty training goes. he'd been going round playing in his undies and had 3 accidents in them, 2 wees and 1 poo, think he got distracted playing which is what i thought would happen.

i got him home and took his training nappy off and left him bare again and he was absolutely fine, no accidents. it's definitely the undies that are confusing him, i think they're offering him the same comfort as a nappy so he forgets to go on the potty.

i've taken him round to his childminder's today in nappies, will let him have a few hours off thinking about it, not sure if this is advisable but easier for his childminder until he gets a better hang of the undies.

he only goes to the childminder 2 days, just to keep him socialising with his little friends there and to keep his place open in case i end up going back to work (which i absolutely do not want to do!). i think i will make sure he's wearing undies in the house between now and when he goes again next wednesday and see how he gets on with them, i can't not let him wear them just because he might have an accident otherwise he'll never learn.

hope things are going ok for you and amy.

  • Dont worry Amy tends to have a few more accidents when she has pants on too. I think like you say they still sometimes think they have a nappy on. It soo hard knowing what to do though isnt it?

We tend to do a bit of both, though lately its been more without the pants coz I've been trying to let the air at her nappy rash. Its still early days for Casper though & when he masters the undies at home then you could try him with them at the childminders again
