Advice please?

We got our BFP last night, and it is all starting to become real now, and very exciting! Next weekend i am going away with some friends (this has been booked for months), and i wanted some advice and tips on how to avoid drinking alcohol without giving the game away? We are not planning to tell anyone for a few weeks atleast, and none of my friends who are going are aware we have been TTC, and i really don't want to tell anyone yet, as don't want to take it for granted. To add to that, the place where we are staying has a hot tub, and obviously we have all been talking about sipping bubbly in the hot tub etc....which i know is also advised against because of the chance of overheating. Unless i just tell them i am on a health kick and have a couple of sips of wine with lots of soda water and subtly throw the rest away.

Sorry to be quite long winded, but am so new to this and i am already worrying about how i am going to get away with it?

Any comments would be really appreciated ladies xx

Maybe you could say you are taking antibiotics for something? Not sure about the hot tub though, have a lovely time!

i had 2 hens whilst newly pregnant at 5 and 8 weeks, i used the antibiotic story but its pretty obvious the real reason, it does really help if you can get one person on side to team up to buy drinks mixers without the alcohol, you could say you were on your period to get out of the hottub thing? have a fab time!

Hi, I remember this feelin I had a weekend away for a wedding the day after I hound out! I went with the antibiotic story but didn't work well my two best friends knew straight away! Maybe if you spike your own drink with non alcohol drink and pretend, sip the odd glass of wineimage as for the hot tub just sit on the edge and put you legs in say your too warm to get in fully hopefully it's not an outdoor hottub!!! Goodluck time will fly before you can tell everyone! X

With the hot tub, I wouldn't worry too much about going in. It's only like a warm bath. My parents have one and I used it constantly through out my first pregnancy without any issue. I would go for the antibiotic reason for not drinking. Have a lovely weekend x

Thankyou so much for your comments! It's so great knowing there are people in same situation who can offer advice! I had thought about the anti-biotic reason, and agree it could seem obvious, but also what if my friends ask to see them?!!! I know I'm probably worrying too much! Just want to be able to have a good weekend without worrying! There is one of my friends who I would trust to tell - I would trust her with my life! It's just whether she or I would have the opportunity to make other drinks as we are staying in self catering! But I will defo be clumsy and knock atleast one glass of wine over and get myself a sneaky soft drink instead! I had thought of just dangling my legs in hot rub coz I do always get hot! It is outside though!!! Ha!

Any other ideas? Or similar experiences? I know I can just deny it if anyone directly asks, just don't want to feel uncomfortable and haven't told family yet x

I had a trick when I was first pregnant, on my round I went to the bar and told the bar man that I wanted a non-alcoholic beer but I didnt want my friends to know I wasnt drinking so asked for it to be put in a glass. Then when it was their round I said 'oh that beer has gone to my head, can I have a soft drink this time round please?'. Nobody knew!

You say you only got your BFP a few days ago, but how far gone are you? If you're early enough on, the baby is still getting nutrients from the sac, your placenta won't have taken over yet so you would be safe to have a drink

Sscn-the online calculator says I am 5 weeks now!?

I suppose it depends how far you want to go with the tale??? You could prime one of them a couple of days before , tell them you have a infected wisdom tooth / suspected absess, and take a pic with you mouth full of something soft of one side so it looks swollen. The antibiotics given by denitists you really really cant drink on, it makes you violently sick even up to 48 hours after you finished ( trust me this happened on last years christmas party too me and was so ill). If you have the pic and they know before hand they are more likely to believe you.

Again it is getting a little 'involved' in the storyline and is prob easier to keep it simple. sscn - how long does that apply for??

    xx

I didnt know you could drink upto a certain point though, thats interesting.

Somewhere around week 10, afaik it can be as early as week 8. From what ive read, most women experience a drop in symptoms when it happens.

Definitely at 5 weeks if it were me in your situation I would be happy enough as the baby is getting no nutrition at all from you at the moment.

You could say you just finished the antibiotics which means you need to stay off the booze for another 48 hours and they have caused thrush as a side effect which gives you a reason to dodge the hot-tub too! Either that or appear at the hottub with a glass of appetiser and an open bottle of bubbly and then say it's gone to your head and go onto water!

    Firstly congrats!

Secondly, I had this exact same situation two weeks after my BFP - a really boozy long weekend in Center Parks with three other couples, planned 6 months earlier.

My trick was to make my own drinks in the lodge and have "gin and tonic" - just tonic, obviously. I was sick of the taste of tonic by the end of that weekend! I slipped to the kitchen on my own to top up, so always had a full glass when others offered. When we were out, my DH made sure he always offered to go and get rounds (a later point in the first 3 months, I got the first round and had a word with the barman, who made sure that all the "gins" were just tonic and my friends were charged accordingly - but that only works if it's a small bar with only one barman!)

I told my friends that I had loads of work to do and took my laptop away for the weekend. That gave me a great excuse for not drinking so much at dinner and having earlier nights (I was exhausted). I just made sure I was up a little earlier than everyone else, so they saw me sat there with my laptop in the mornings.

I couldn't swim, as there are rapids and slides - so I just conveniently forgot my swimsuit! Not sure if that would work so well with the girls and the hot tub, as I guess you could go in wearing undies - but you could just say that you have a few really nice sets and don't want to ruin them?

One thing that really reassured me during the weekend was a friend's comment beforehand (I had confided in her). She said that most people wouldn't say anything to you if they suspected anyway. So just relax and enjoy the weekend

    xx

Thanks for your replies ladies! Lots to think about! Happilymarried2010 I am pleased what you said about friends not asking if they have guessed - as that is what I am hoping!

I was genuinely poorly last week with fluey symptoms and a couple of friends are aware so I thought rather than dodging alcohol all weekend I decided to go along with the anti biotic story! I text them earlier about other stuff and just mentioned that I had to pop to gp and as i have been ill for over a week I've been given anti biotics. I'm thinking of telling them that my flu has moved to ear infection and also advised not to go in hot tub!!!!!! Ha ha! So can just dangle in!

I feel better now having already put it out there and hoping that if they suspect anything they won't say! I am going to tell one if the girls in the morning the truth as really trust her.

Thanks again - I will let you know how it goes! Have you all got a nice weekend planned?

    Xx

Just a thought re: hot tub. As far as I'm aware, it's all to do with your body overheating (as you are allowed baths if they aren't too hot, as the water cools - unlike hot tubs, where the temperature is maintained). So surely if you keep getting out to cool down your body, that should be OK?

I said I'd had food poisoning so my tummy was very fragile so couldn't drink. Also could get u out hot tub if u say the heat makes u feel sick again.

Say u had a dodgy Chinese or something.

    Congrats and good luck x

    Hiya,

I am in the same situation... we have an engagement party next week and we are staying over in the hotel so I cant use the im driving card either.

I know if I dont drink everyone will suspect, we are going for the whole antibiotic story though so hopefully people will just let it drop and wont make a deal of it.

I have been quite sick this year so people may believe me...

Have a nice time hun and try and not make a big deal of it...

you could call the girls a few days earlier and say you might not make it as you are unwell... then call again a day or two later saying you feel better but are on anitibiotics and debating about going... that way the story is more plausible.... and the oscar goes to....

Hi ladies, I just though i would take the time to let you know how it went this weekend, as you were all so lovely and helpful giving me ideas of how to get through the weekend away without giving the game away!

Well, it was great! It really helped telling one of my friends before we went, as she helped to back me up that i was genuinely poorly last week and clearly needed the anti-biotics!!!(Not!!)

Only two of the girls used the hot tub as it was chilly outside, so that was not an issue. With the alcohol, i said about the anti-biotics and felt like i was quite a good actress....so hopefully got away with it.

yrose20118 what about pretending to drink e.g. G & T or vodka and coke, and you other half having a glass of tonic water or coke constantly on stand by and could subtly swap with you, when someone buys you a drink? That is my next plan when we are put socialising!!
