High blood pressure - Labetalol medication.

Hi ladies

Just wondered if there are any of you out there that also suffer from high blood pressure?

I was first diagnosed with high blood pressure about a year ago and i have been on Labetalol for about 10mths now.

I have had LOADS of tests and they can find no reason for my high blood pressure - apart from a possible family link as my mum was recently diagnosed with the same.... although she's 48 so it's not really as shocking as someone who's only 27 being diagnosed with it.

I am now 10 & half weeks pregnant and it looks as though my blood pressure is creeping back up.... took it last night (i have my own manchine) and it was 127/87 which is pretty good for me (my bottom number has been as high as 111 in the past) but before i was pregnant my bottom number had dropped to in the 70s.

I have my first midwife app on Monday and i expect that they may increase my labetalol dosage (i'm currently on 200mg twice a day). I have a specialist consultant that i will speak to throughout my pregnancy.

But i just wondered if there was anyone out there in the same situation as me??

  • Not exactly the same, but when I was pregnant my BP went sky high at the end and I also took labetalol. I ended up in hospital for the last week of my pregnancy and then induced, and continued with the medication for about a month, and my BP is now back to normal.

I found that the first time the doctor/MW took my BP it was always mega high, but would go down the second time! Also, when they did it manually it was always lower than with the machine.

  • Hi coco

Thanks for your reply. Were you able to have a 'normal' birth with the blood pressure? Or did you end up needing a c-section?
I'm thinking that labour is bound to increase my BP even more and that i'll end up needing a c-section????

  • Hi Broody! I have had high BP for about two years and was put on to Labetalol when ttc. I still take 100mg a day. I've never had any tests but I guess it's genetic as my mum has had it since she was 19!!!!

Anyway, I see a consultant too and, luckily, my BP has remained really good. Something they are looking into is high ALT levels that came up on a recent blood test. These are to do with your liver function and, apparently, labetalol can increase them. This *can* lead to a condition called Obstetric Choliostasis so I am being monitored.

I can't have a home birth or a use my local birthing centre because I am classed as high risk. Other than that, they haven't told me it will affect labour and birth.

Not sure if that helps or not!

  • Hi Kayecee

Thank you - yes that does help!

My liver & kidney function was one of the first things my consultant tested coz i think there can be quite a few problems with those that can cause high BP.
Good to hear that you're still aiming for a normal birth, and i dont actually mind being classed as 'high risk' coz it means that i get to go to the nicer hospital in my area!
I'm on 400mg a day of Labetalol already though so hopefully that wont be increased too much....
Has anyone implied that you might not be able to breastfeed because of the medication??? xxx
  • Haven't heard anything about the breastfeeding - is that something that's been mentioned to you? x
  • I googled it once.... while ttc and think it said it's not a good idea.... and now i'm too scared to ask incase the answer is that i can't coz i REALLY want to xx
  • I was put on Labetalol during my pregnancy because my other BP meds weren't safe during pregnancy. My doc took me off it because my scalp got all itchy for about an hour after I took it every single time.
