Silly question- how do the measure how far dilated you are?

I presume they examine you internally but how do they measure how many centimetres dilated you are? Can they just tell with their fingers?!? Sorry if this is a really daft question and if I sound really thick but no one has told me and I really can't figure it out.

Thanks

  • thanks v much, didn't think that was possible but at the same time didn't think they would measure it with a ruler either (haha only joking)
    Thanks again xx
  • You've made my day chocolate cake! I desperately wanted to know but didn't really want to ask in case you all thought its one of those things you 'just know'!

    Thank you!

  • the way it is done is by measuring the circle that your cervix makes when it opens up- midwives put two fingers in and can tell how big the gap is from one side of the cervix to the other!
  • Its a good job you asked this question because i didn't know either lol x
