How come? membrane sweep

How come they give you a sweep at 40weeks if its your first, but if its your second or more you have to wait untill 41 weeks? is it because baby is more likely to come on its own? it just doesnt make sense to me.

sorry hun cnt help but didnt wanna r&r! iv not heard that b4! bit mad isnt it! i had a sweep with my 1st when i was a day overdue and had her 4 days later but with grace i had her 10 days early.God knows why they say that cuz its not guarenteed ul go into labour sooner with 2nd etc is it? xx

I've never come across this as a rule. My midwife has always said she wouldn't do a sweep untill overdue and then only if favourable and that was with my first two babies and sure this will be the case too with my third. Sorry not much help.
